Senior high school work immersion is supervised, work-related learning connected to a student’s specialization and goals. DepEd’s 2017 curriculum guide set a minimum of 80 hours, but that does not mean every student completes exactly 80 hours: schools have described different delivery models, and current arrangements may depend on the student’s cohort and school.

What work immersion is

Work immersion gives Grade 11 or Grade 12 learners exposure to a work environment related to their field of specialization. DepEd’s 2025 pilot guideline describes it as an opportunity for learners to be “exposed to and familiarized with the work-related environment related to their field of specialization.” The goal is to connect classroom learning and a learner’s postsecondary plans with a relevant workplace.

It is a curriculum subject, not simply a job search or a promise of paid employment. The 2017 DepEd curriculum guide lists it as a graduation requirement and says learners should have completed at least four specialized subjects before taking it. Ask your school which curriculum and prerequisites apply to your cohort.

What students are expected to gain

The intended experience is practical: learners apply classroom principles, build skills relevant to their specialization, and practice communication and human relations. It is also an opportunity to develop good work habits and understand workplace expectations.

The placement should relate to the learner’s specialization and postsecondary goal, rather than being treated as interchangeable with any workplace exposure. The school’s coordinator can explain how a proposed placement fits the student’s course and applicable requirements.

How to prepare before the placement

DepEd’s 2017 guide describes preparation in both workplace conduct and job-application skills. Requirements can vary by school, so confirm the exact forms and deadlines with the immersion coordinator.

  • Understand workplace rules and responsibilities. Review expected conduct, teamwork, agreement terms, and the rights and responsibilities of participants.
  • Learn safety and confidentiality expectations. Ask what safety procedures apply at the venue and how to handle confidential information.
  • Prepare application materials. The guide lists a résumé, an application, and relevant clearance documents among learner outputs.
  • Practice interviews and professional communication. Preparation includes interview skills and an essay on workplace conduct.

Before starting, make sure you know who supervises you, whom to contact with a concern, what schedule the school has approved, and what to do if a safety issue arises. Do not assume that a workplace’s usual arrangements automatically satisfy school requirements.

How many hours work immersion takes

DepEd’s April 2017 curriculum guide states a minimum of 80 hours. That is a minimum in the guide, not a guarantee that every school selects exactly 80 hours. A 2018 DepEd explanation described school-selected models of 80, 240, or 320 hours. It said a school could design a model for a particular situation subject to Regional Office approval, while taking relevant DepEd, TESDA, and DOLE guidance into account.

Model described by DepEd in 2018 What the figure means
80 hours One of the delivery models described by the 2018 explanation; the 2017 guide separately states an 80-hour minimum.
240 hours A longer school-selectable model described in the 2018 explanation.
320 hours A longer school-selectable model described in the 2018 explanation.

The 2018 explanation also described limits for immersion participants who were over 15 and under 18: no more than 40 hours per week and eight hours per day at the venue. Treat these as guidance described in that 2018 source, not confirmation of the rules or schedule for every student today. Ask your school to confirm the applicable limits and approved timetable.

Why your school and cohort matter

DepEd’s strengthened senior high school program page lists pilot and implementation issuances covering 2025–2027. As a result, older descriptions of minimum hours and delivery models should not be taken as proof that one schedule applies to every current school or cohort. The applicable curriculum, placement arrangements, and implementation details need to be confirmed locally.

Before accepting a schedule or placement, ask the immersion coordinator:

  • Which curriculum and work immersion requirements apply to my cohort?
  • How many total hours will I complete, and how are they scheduled around classes?
  • Who is the partner workplace and what duties or learning activities are expected?
  • Which résumé, application, clearance documents, or other forms must I submit, and by when?
  • What safety procedures, supervision arrangements, and contact person apply at the venue?

What work immersion does—and does not—tell you

Immersion is intended to build familiarity with a related work environment and help learners apply skills and classroom concepts. It is not, by itself, evidence of a job offer or a guarantee of a particular career outcome.

DepEd’s 2018 article reported that 1,475 of 1,477 voluntary National Certification Assessment takers in Region III passed, which it described as a 99% pass rate. That figure is specific to those regional test takers; it is not a nationwide statistic or a direct measure of work immersion outcomes.
