Wonder combines menus from multiple restaurant concepts in one ordering operation, and it reached 12 Connecticut locations when it opened in Canton, according to an October 11, 2026 report. The company’s model relies on software, centralized logistics and kitchen technology; the reporting describes AI and greater automation as ambitions, not as proof that AI currently runs its Connecticut kitchens.
What is Wonder?
Wonder is a restaurant and ordering service that lets customers choose from multiple food concepts through one location and, according to the company, combine items in an order. Its Connecticut page offers delivery and pickup and describes dine-in at food halls. Wonder says delivery averages 35 minutes or less; that is the company’s claim, not an independently measured result. Wonder’s Connecticut locations page describes its service, while the Hartford Courant’s October 11, 2026 report details its expansion and operating model.

The menu mix described in the report spans cuisines including Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, Indian, pizza, salads, barbecue, poke and desserts. Wonder says it partners with chefs and restaurants; the report also describes concepts created by Wonder and national brands, including Streetbird by Marcus Samuelsson.

How the kitchens work—and whether meals are cooked on site
The Courant describes Wonder outlets as compact operations where one kitchen prepares food for many concepts. It reports that some foundational components are prepared centrally and transported to local storefronts for finishing. Wonder disputed the characterization of its locations as reheating stations, telling the newspaper that dishes are cooked, assembled and finished to order using methods such as grilling, roasting, baking, frying, simmering and sous vide.
That distinction matters: a meal can be finished to order at a local kitchen while some components were prepared elsewhere. The reporting does not establish that every ingredient or component is made from scratch at each Connecticut location. Wonder’s format may offer breadth and a shared ordering experience, but it is not the same operating model as a collection of independent restaurants each running its own kitchen.

What role do technology and AI play?
Founder Marc Lore has framed Wonder as a combination of software and culinary engineering. In a 2024 statement quoted by the Courant, he said: “The real magic of Wonder lies at the intersection of software and culinary engineering. That’s our mode.” The article says Lore described spending hundreds of millions of dollars and employing 200 full-time culinary and software engineers over five years to build a compact operation capable of offering 30 concepts across cuisines.
The report says Wonder acquired Spyce and its Infinite Kitchen and Infinite Makeline technology for $186 million. Lore has described Infinite Kitchen as having the potential to assemble 500 bowls an hour. In a Fortune video interview, as reported by the Courant, he said, “Every bowl comes out perfect every time,” and, “You’re going to get hotter food, faster food.” Those are his claims about the technology’s potential, not independently verified performance figures.
Wonder’s announced plans are more ambitious than what the report establishes about current Connecticut operations. The Courant said the company announced a $450 million partnership with DoorDash in September 2026. Lore described a goal of a “fully autonomous food system” that could plan, produce and deliver personalized meals at scale, while North America CEO Tony Hoggett described combining AI, kitchen robotics and autonomous delivery. These statements outline a direction; they do not show that AI currently operates the Connecticut kitchens or that the full system is already in place.

Is Wonder a food hall, ghost kitchen or something else?
The labels capture only parts of the model. Wonder’s own Connecticut page describes food halls with dine-in alongside delivery and pickup, while the Courant’s account emphasizes compact storefront kitchens serving multiple menus. That makes Wonder different from a conventional food hall where separate restaurants may occupy stalls and operate independently, and different from a delivery-only kitchen in locations offering dine-in or pickup. The specific experience depends on the location and ordering option.

The appeal described in the Courant is convenience and variety: people can order different cuisines and price points through one operation. Some customers quoted in the report praised quick pickup and the ability to order across concepts. Those are individual comments, not a survey of customers or proof of typical service times.
Criticism centers on the experience of eating food produced through a centralized, standardized system, the role of labor-saving technology, pressure on independent restaurants and the possibility that a small number of companies could gain greater control over food production and delivery. Jen Faigel of CommonWealth Kitchen, an advocate for independent restaurants, told the Courant: “Companies like Wonder aren’t built to feed people. They’re built to make money. They’re just fast food in a nicer wrapper.” She also warned that convenience could weaken food’s connections to community and culture. These are her judgments and concerns, rather than findings that the report quantifies for Connecticut.

Wonder’s response on staffing is also company-reported. A spokesperson told the Courant that Infinite Makeline handles repetitive assembly tasks, is not viewed as a replacement for employees, and had not reduced store-level headcount after rollout at a New York location. That statement is not an independent assessment of the technology’s labor effects across the company or in Connecticut.
How large is Wonder’s expansion plan?
The Courant reported 160 operating locations between New Hampshire and Delaware and a company goal of 400 locations before 2028. The 400 figure is a target, not a guaranteed outcome. The same report put Connecticut at 12 locations as of October 11, 2026. Those figures describe the company’s reported footprint and ambition, not its market share or impact on local restaurants.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe sources do not provide an independent Connecticut-specific statistic on Wonder’s effect on restaurant employment, independent restaurant closures or market share. The criticism and the company’s staffing statement should therefore be weighed as viewpoints and claims, not treated as evidence of a measured local outcome.
What to consider before ordering
If you are deciding whether Wonder fits what you want, focus on practical differences rather than the AI label:
Quick Recap
- Ordering: Wonder says customers can combine concepts in one order; check the location page for delivery, pickup or dine-in availability.
- Preparation: Some components may be prepared centrally, while Wonder says dishes are finished to order at the storefront. The reported model is not identical to a fully independent restaurant kitchen at every location.
- Venue: A food hall may offer dine-in, but not every Wonder format or location should be assumed to provide the same experience.
- Service-time claims: Wonder’s stated delivery average is a company claim; actual timing can vary.
