With GPT-4o Retired From ChatGPT, Who Should Pay for ChatGPT Plus?

GPT-4o was retired from ChatGPT in February 2026. Here is who should pay $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus, who should stay on Free, and when Pro, Business, Enterprise, or the API makes more sense.

Most occasional users should stay on ChatGPT Free. ChatGPT Plus is worth considering when you use ChatGPT daily, repeatedly hit Free-tier limits, need faster or more reliable access, or depend on features such as advanced reasoning, deep research, projects, tasks, and expanded file analysis.

There is one important update to the original question: OpenAI made GPT-4o available to Free users on May 13, 2024, but retired GPT-4o from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. GPT-4o remains available through the API, not as a reason to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus.

The short answer

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, billed monthly. It is not a payment to unlock GPT-4o. It is a payment for more capacity, priority access, faster responses, and broader access to advanced tools and models.

User Best starting point Reason
Occasional user Free Enough for ordinary questions, drafting, search, files, images, and occasional analysis.
Daily individual user Plus Higher limits and expanded productivity features can reduce interruptions.
Heavy individual user Plus, then Pro Move to Pro only if Plus limits are repeatedly restrictive.
Business team Business or Enterprise Administrative controls, shared workspaces, security, and organizational protections matter more than a personal subscription.
Software developer OpenAI API API access is programmatic and billed separately from ChatGPT Plus.

What “GPT-4o is free” originally meant

When OpenAI announced free GPT-4o access on May 13, 2024, Free and Plus users did not receive identical service. Free users could use the model subject to limits, while OpenAI said Plus users would receive limits up to five times higher at launch.

That distinction is still useful for understanding ChatGPT plans:

  • Model availability: whether an account can use a model at all.
  • Usage allowance: how many messages, uploads, or tool calls are permitted.
  • Fallback behavior: what happens after a limit is reached.
  • Feature access: whether tools such as deep research, projects, tasks, or custom GPT creation are included.
  • Reliability: how much priority an account receives during periods of heavy demand.

OpenAI’s original announcement is available at its GPT-4o Free-tier announcement.

The premise is now out of date

OpenAI announced that GPT-4o would be retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. The company’s Help Center says GPT-4o and several older models are no longer available in ChatGPT, although API availability was not changed. Business, Enterprise, and Edu customers temporarily retained GPT-4o inside Custom GPTs until April 3, 2026.

So if you are subscribing specifically to restore GPT-4o in ChatGPT, Plus will not do that. See OpenAI’s retirement announcement and current retirement details.

What Free includes

Free is no longer merely a basic text chatbot. OpenAI says Free users can access current-generation model capabilities, web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, image creation, GPT discovery and use, and other tools, subject to limits and availability.

That makes Free a sensible choice for:

  • Brainstorming or drafting a few times per week.
  • Occasional homework and study help.
  • Short-document summaries.
  • Translation, rewriting, and proofreading.
  • Occasional web research.
  • Trying image generation or voice features.
  • Using existing GPTs without creating your own.

Free-tier limits are stricter for advanced functions, including data analysis, file uploads, and image creation. They can vary by model, tool, demand, rollout, and time window. OpenAI’s Free-tier FAQ is the best place to check current availability.

What Plus buys for $20

OpenAI lists Plus benefits including priority access during high traffic, faster responses, higher model limits, access to advanced reasoning models available to the account, expanded file uploads and analysis, expanded image generation, advanced voice capabilities, deep research where available, projects, tasks, and custom GPT creation.

These are best understood as four kinds of value:

1. More capacity

If you regularly run out of messages, uploads, research access, or image-generation allowance, Plus gives you more room. It does not necessarily provide unlimited use; Plus limits still apply and may change.

2. Less interruption

Priority access and faster responses can matter when you are working against a deadline, analyzing a dataset, debugging code, or preparing a presentation. For casual users, the same benefits may be worth little.

3. More advanced workflows

Plus is more compelling if you use deep research, repeated file analysis, data charts, advanced voice, projects, tasks, or custom GPT creation. A user who only asks occasional questions may never use these features enough to justify the subscription.

4. Higher practical productivity

The relevant question is not whether Plus produces better answers in the abstract. It is whether the added access saves enough time or removes enough friction to justify $20 each month.

Who should pay for Plus?

The daily knowledge worker

Plus is reasonable if ChatGPT is part of your daily writing, planning, research, coding, or analysis workflow and Free limits interrupt you often enough to be costly.

The researcher or analyst

People working with multiple documents, spreadsheets, charts, or repeated research sessions may get more value from expanded tools and allowances than from the historical GPT-4o label.

The creator using several tools

Writers, designers, and content producers who frequently combine file uploads, image generation, voice, and long-running projects are stronger Plus candidates than users who only need proofreading.

The intensive student

A student working through a major project may find Plus useful for a month or two. That does not mean a year-round subscription is necessary. Subscribe when the workload justifies it, then reassess.

The user who repeatedly hits limits

This is the clearest upgrade signal. Keep a simple record for a normal week. If you repeatedly see messages that a model or tool is unavailable, or if waiting disrupts important work, Plus may be rational.

Who should stay on Free?

Do not pay for Plus if you mainly ask occasional factual questions, draft short emails, proofread documents, or use ChatGPT only a few times per week without hitting limits. Buying Plus solely because GPT-4o was once associated with the paid tier is also not a sound reason.

A practical rule:

  • A few prompts per week: stay Free.
  • Daily use with rare interruptions: remain Free until the inconvenience becomes recurring.
  • Several work sessions per day: Plus is easier to justify.
  • All-day, production-critical use: evaluate Pro, Business, Enterprise, or another provider rather than assuming Plus is enough.

When Plus is the wrong product

You need API access

ChatGPT Plus is access to the ChatGPT application. The OpenAI API is metered developer access for applications, automations, and programmatic workflows. Plus does not include API credits. API usage is billed separately; see OpenAI’s developer platform and API pricing.

You need organizational controls

A personal Plus account may be inappropriate for employer, client, health, legal, financial, or proprietary information. Business and Enterprise plans are designed around shared workspaces, administration, centralized management, security, support, and business data protections. Review the current plan comparison and applicable data policies before choosing an account.

You need more than Plus can provide

OpenAI positions Pro as a higher-priced individual plan for people who need substantially more usage and access to additional advanced tools. Pro is not automatically better value. It makes sense only when the additional capacity produces corresponding value and Plus limits are repeatedly insufficient.

A simple way to decide

  1. Use Free during a normal week of your actual work.
  2. Record each time a limit, missing feature, slow access, or unavailable tool causes friction.
  3. Estimate the time or opportunity cost of those interruptions.
  4. Try Plus for one month if the problem is recurring.
  5. Keep it only if the paid features materially change your workflow.

Also check the account details before subscribing. If a paid account still appears to be Free, OpenAI advises confirming that you are signed in with the same authentication method used for the purchase and reviewing your account settings.

Bottom line

ChatGPT Plus is no longer a payment to unlock GPT-4o. GPT-4o was retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. Plus is a payment for more room, more reliable access, faster responses, and expanded workflow features. If Free already handles your needs, keep the $20. If ChatGPT is part of your daily work and limits regularly interrupt you, Plus is the rational upgrade.
