Wing and Walmart announced on January 11, 2026, that Wing plans to add drone delivery at 150 additional Walmart stores. The rollout is expected to continue throughout 2026 and into 2027. If completed as described, the expansion would bring Wing’s Walmart network to more than 270 stores and reach roughly 10% of the U.S. population—but those are announced targets, not proof that all locations are already operating.

What Wing and Walmart announced

Alphabet-owned Wing plans to expand Walmart drone delivery beyond its existing operations in the Dallas–Fort Worth area and Atlanta. The companies said the next phase would add 150 Walmart stores over 2026 and 2027.

The phrase “another 150 stores” refers to locations added beyond the existing or previously announced network. It does not mean Wing has already launched at 150 stores, nor does it mean Walmart is offering drone delivery nationwide.

Wing said the eventual footprint could exceed 270 Walmart stores and reach about 10% of the U.S. population. Those figures were company-attributed projections reported by TechCrunch, not independently audited operating totals.

Where the service is available

Walmart’s partnership with Wing began in 2023 with a pilot at two Dallas-area stores serving approximately 60,000 homes. The operation later expanded to 18 Walmart Supercenters in Dallas–Fort Worth and then to Atlanta.

Wing identified Houston as the first new market in this expansion, with a planned launch date of January 15, 2026. Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Miami were also mentioned as part of the broader expected footprint. Earlier plans had identified Houston, Orlando, Tampa and Charlotte.

That list should not be treated as a complete rollout map. The available reporting does not provide a store-by-store list or confirm the live status of every market. A customer’s eligibility can depend on the specific Walmart store serving the address, not simply on whether the customer lives in a listed metropolitan area.

To check availability, enter the delivery address in the applicable Walmart or Wing ordering flow. Eligibility may also be affected by airspace restrictions, local safety requirements, weather, time of day, inventory and temporary operating suspensions.

What customers can order

Wing is positioning the service for small, time-sensitive Walmart orders rather than complete weekly grocery shops. Reported examples include:

  • Eggs, ground beef, tomatoes, avocados and limes
  • Lunchables, Takis and other snacks
  • Over-the-counter medicine
  • Beverages, including hot coffee or lattes

The available assortment will vary. A drone’s payload, packaging requirements, product dimensions, temperature concerns, inventory and local policies can all limit what can be ordered. A five-pound aircraft capacity does not mean every combination of products weighing five pounds will be accepted.

Heavy beverages, oversized household goods, large grocery baskets and items requiring special handling are generally better suited to conventional delivery or store pickup.

How fast and how far drone delivery goes

Wing describes the service as on-demand, but there is no universal delivery-time guarantee or nationwide service radius in the reported announcement. A secondary social-media excerpt referenced deliveries within roughly six miles and delivery in as little as 30 minutes, but those details should be treated as market-specific rather than a promise for every Walmart location.

Drone delivery areas are usually centered on participating stores. Living in the same city as a Wing-enabled Walmart does not automatically make an address eligible. Customers should rely on the delivery estimate and availability shown for their address at checkout, rather than assuming a quoted time applies to all orders.

How the delivery process works

The basic retail workflow is straightforward:

  1. The customer checks whether the address is in an eligible delivery area.
  2. The customer selects items that qualify for drone delivery.
  3. The Walmart store picks and prepares the order.
  4. Wing loads and launches the aircraft from the store or its associated operating site.
  5. The package is delivered to an approved location at the destination.

The source material does not establish the exact app, checkout labels, delivery fees or customer handoff procedure for every market. Those details may differ by location and can change as the service expands.

The aircraft and its practical limits

Wing recently completed its first commercial flights using a larger aircraft capable of carrying a five-pound payload, according to the reported announcement. That capacity is meaningful for small grocery, convenience and medicine orders, but it is not comparable with the load carried by a delivery van.

The larger aircraft could help Wing improve the economics of each flight by carrying more useful merchandise. The available reporting does not establish the aircraft’s exact range, speed, production volume or how quickly it will be deployed across the Walmart network.

Weather and operating conditions also matter. High winds, rain, storms, poor visibility, extreme temperatures, temporary airspace restrictions, aircraft maintenance, launch-site issues and store-level inventory problems can delay or suspend service.

Why Walmart and Wing are expanding

The partnership gives each company something the other already has. Walmart provides a dense network of stores and local inventory. Wing supplies the aircraft, delivery system and operational expertise needed to serve nearby addresses.

Co-locating drone operations with Walmart stores can reduce the distance between fulfillment and launch. A larger network may also improve utilization of aircraft, launch infrastructure, staff and monitoring systems. More orders from each store could be important because drone delivery economics depend heavily on volume and repeat use.

Wing’s chief business officer said the company’s top 25% of customers were using the service approximately three times per week. That suggests some customers view it as a recurring convenience rather than an occasional novelty. It does not, however, reveal the total number of customers, average order value, customer acquisition cost or cost per delivery.

Wing did not disclose whether its Walmart operation was profitable or when it expected to become profitable. The expansion therefore demonstrates strategic commitment and reported repeat demand—not a proven profit model.

What “commercial scale” does—and does not—mean

The move is significant because it extends a Walmart pilot that began in 2023 into a multi-market retail network. A planned footprint of more than 270 stores would be a considerably broader operating base than a handful of demonstrations.

But commercial scale should not be confused with nationwide availability or financial success. The announcement does not prove that:

  • All 150 additional stores are operating
  • Every customer in a participating city can order by drone
  • Drones are cheaper than vans on every route
  • The operation is profitable
  • Every flight operates without human monitoring

A more precise description is that Wing is scaling an autonomous or highly automated delivery system supported by operational oversight and safety procedures. The supplied reporting does not establish that the system is fully independent of human supervision.

How drone delivery fits Walmart’s broader network

Drones are best understood as one layer of Walmart’s delivery strategy, not a replacement for its entire last-mile operation:

Delivery method Best fit
Drone delivery Small, lightweight and urgent orders over short distances
Traditional last-mile delivery Larger baskets and longer-distance orders
Store pickup Customers who can collect a prepared order themselves
Third-party delivery Orders served through external logistics networks, including Wing’s DoorDash partnership

The central business question is not whether drones can replace delivery vans. It is whether they can handle a narrow category of urgent, small-basket orders reliably and at an acceptable cost while conventional delivery handles heavier and larger purchases.

The unanswered financial questions

Wing’s expansion will be judged by more than the number of stores. Important measures include orders per store, aircraft utilization, average order value, labor and remote-operations costs, maintenance, launch infrastructure, customer fees, weather-related downtime and regulatory compliance.

The reported customer-frequency figure is encouraging, but it cannot answer whether each delivery makes money. High repeat usage could improve utilization, while low order values, staffing requirements or weather cancellations could put pressure on margins.

The projected reach of 10% of the U.S. population also requires careful interpretation. It is a population estimate concentrated around participating stores, not 10% geographic coverage of the country.

What Walmart customers should expect

For an eligible customer, Wing delivery may be useful when a small item is needed quickly and driving to the store is inconvenient. It is less useful for a full grocery trip, bulky products or orders that need guaranteed temperature-controlled handling.

Availability may disappear temporarily even when an address normally qualifies. Before placing an order, check the current item eligibility, delivery estimate, fees and any weather-related notices shown in the local ordering experience.

As of the reported announcement, the rollout remained a plan extending through 2026 and into 2027. Without a complete current store list or verified operational dashboard, readers should distinguish announced markets from stores that are confirmed live.

Why the announcement matters

Wing and Walmart are testing whether drone delivery can become an ordinary retail option rather than a limited pilot. The ingredients are visible: Walmart stores provide local fulfillment, Wing is increasing payload capacity, and some customers are reportedly ordering several times a week.

The harder test is execution. The companies must build sufficient order density, keep operations reliable across changing weather and local restrictions, manage safety and oversight costs, and make the service attractive without relying only on novelty. The 150-store plan is an important expansion, but its ultimate significance will depend on how many locations become operational and whether the economics work at repeatable scale.
