If your activated PC qualifies for Windows 11, the equivalent-edition upgrade is free. If it does not, Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program currently offers a no-additional-cost enrollment route, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time $30 payment, with coverage listed through October 12, 2027. A new custom-built computer normally calls for a current Windows 11 license—not an old Windows 10 key.
Microsoft ended normal support for Windows 10 Home and Pro, version 22H2, on October 14, 2025. The operating system still runs, but ordinary feature updates, quality updates, security fixes and general technical support have ended. Information and ESU dates in this guide were checked against Microsoft’s current pages on August 18, 2026.
What Windows 10 costs now
“What is the Windows 10 price?” is no longer the most useful first question. Your total depends on activation status, Windows 11 compatibility, whether the computer is personal or business-managed, and how long you need to keep it.
| Situation | Likely Windows-related cost | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Activated Windows 10 PC that meets Windows 11 requirements | $0 | Upgrade to the equivalent Windows 11 edition through the normal Microsoft upgrade path. |
| Activated Windows 10 22H2 PC that fails Windows 11 checks | $0, 1,000 Rewards points, or $30 plus tax | Consumer ESU is a temporary security bridge through October 12, 2027, subject to eligibility and enrollment terms. |
| Unactivated installation | Cost of a legitimate license, if no digital entitlement exists | Check activation and the device’s original license before buying anything. |
| Custom-built or otherwise unlicensed PC | Usually a current Windows 11 license | Microsoft’s live checkout is authoritative; commonly reported price signals are about $139 Home and $199 Pro, but prices can change. |
| New or refurbished computer | Hardware price, usually including Windows | A used Windows 10 machine does not restore Windows 10 support. |
| Business or enterprise deployment | Commercial licensing and ESU terms | Do not apply consumer ESU pricing to organization-managed devices. |

Is Windows 10 still sold?
Microsoft may still provide Windows 10 installation media for reinstalling a device that already has a valid license, but that is different from selling a current, supported Windows 10 product. Download the installer only from Microsoft’s official Windows 10 software-download page.
Old retail and OEM keys may activate in some circumstances. Activation alone, however, does not prove that a key was lawfully obtained, that it matches your edition, or that it can be transferred. Marketplace listings for inexpensive keys can involve OEM, volume, regional or otherwise restricted licenses. Confirm the seller, invoice, edition, region, license type and transfer rights; a low price is not evidence of transferable ownership. Microsoft explains the distinction at About genuine Windows and Activate Windows.
Buying a Windows 10 computer
Used, refurbished and old-stock computers can still be listed for sale. They may include a valid OEM license, but Windows 10 mainstream support has ended. Evaluate battery, storage, memory, repairability, security hardware and Windows 11 eligibility—not merely the sticker price.
Check whether your existing PC costs anything
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Activation and record whether Windows is activated and whether it says Home or Pro.
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update and choose Check for updates. Look for a Windows 11 upgrade offer.
- If no offer appears, run Microsoft’s PC Health Check and Windows 11 requirements checks.
- If the PC remains on Windows 10 version 22H2, look in Windows Update for an Enroll now ESU option.
An activated genuine Windows 10 Home installation normally upgrades to Windows 11 Home, and Pro to Pro, at no license charge when the hardware qualifies. Back up your files first; applications and personal files can usually remain during an in-place upgrade, but compatibility testing is prudent.

If Windows is installed but not activated
A computer that shipped with Windows may have a firmware-embedded key or a digital entitlement associated with the device. Reinstalling the same edition can activate automatically on the same hardware. A Home license does not activate Pro, and installing Pro does not create a Pro license. Check activation before purchasing a key; Microsoft’s product-key guidance is at install or upgrade Windows using a product key.
Windows 10 ESU pricing and coverage
For eligible personal-use PCs running Windows 10 version 22H2, Microsoft’s current U.S. consumer ESU page lists three enrollment routes:
- No additional monetary charge through the stated PC-settings-synchronization option.
- 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
- $30 one time, plus applicable tax.
The current page says coverage runs through October 12, 2027, requires a Microsoft account, and allows the ESU license to be used on up to 10 eligible devices. Each device must qualify and be enrolled. Regional availability and terms can differ. See Microsoft’s current ESU page.
Some older Microsoft pages still show October 13, 2026. That earlier date is superseded for this guide by the newer current ESU page; check the live terms before enrolling.

What ESU includes
- Critical and important Windows security updates delivered through Windows Update.
- Coverage only for eligible, enrolled Windows 10 installations.
- Limited technical assistance for ESU activation and installing ESU updates.
What ESU does not include
- New Windows features, redesigns or general quality improvements.
- Full Windows 10 technical support.
- A Windows license or Windows 11 compatibility.
- Protection for unsupported third-party applications, drivers, browsers or peripherals.
ESU is therefore a bridge for a reliable computer, legacy software or a planned replacement—not a return to normal Windows 10 support.
Choosing between a free upgrade, ESU and replacement
Upgrade to Windows 11
Choose this first when the PC is activated and passes Microsoft’s checks. It avoids a license purchase and moves you to the supported platform. Allow time for backup, application testing and learning the changed interface.
Use ESU temporarily
ESU makes sense when the machine is dependable, a critical application cannot yet move, or replacement is being scheduled. Compare the one-time $30 route (plus tax) with downtime and migration costs, and remember that coverage ends.
Replace the computer
Replacement is often better when the system fails because of CPU generation, TPM, Secure Boot, storage, memory, battery health or general age. A new Windows 11 computer commonly includes its license and may provide a warranty, better security hardware and longer driver support. Include data migration and application-reinstallation time in the budget.

Consider another operating system
Linux or another platform can extend hardware life without a Windows license, but verify commercial applications, games, anti-cheat systems, printers and professional workflows first. The software price may be $0 while migration and support costs are not.
Bypassing Windows 11 hardware checks is not an ordinary supported upgrade. It can create uncertainty about updates, drivers, security and future compatibility.
Reinstalling Windows 10
- Back up personal files and verify the edition and license.
- Use Microsoft’s official download page, not a random ISO mirror.
- Install the edition matching the device’s Home or Pro entitlement.
- Provide a product key if digital activation is not detected, then confirm activation in Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
A clean installation is not the same as receiving a new transferable retail license, and reinstalling Windows 10 does not extend its lifecycle.

| License type | Typical relationship to a device | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Retail/FPP | Generally intended to be transferable under Microsoft’s terms | Keep proof of purchase and follow transfer limits. |
| OEM | Normally tied to the original computer | It usually does not transfer to a different PC. |
| Digital license | Activation entitlement associated with hardware and/or a Microsoft account | Edition and hardware changes can affect activation. |
| Volume license | For organizational deployment | Not an ordinary consumer resale license. |
| Gray-market key | May activate initially | May be mis-sold, region-restricted, revoked or unsupported; activation is not proof of ownership. |
Microsoft’s OEM terms are available in its Windows 10 OEM license terms. Do not use unofficial activation tools or treat antivirus software as a substitute for operating-system security updates.

Costs people often overlook
- Backup media, cloud storage or migration assistance.
- Application and driver testing after an upgrade.
- Downtime, clean-install labor and reconfiguration.
- SSD, memory, battery or other repairs needed to extend an old PC.
- Tax and regional differences in ESU or license checkout prices.
- Microsoft-account and settings-synchronization requirements for particular ESU routes.
Microsoft 365 Apps have a separate Windows 10 continuation date described by Microsoft as October 10, 2028. That does not mean the Windows 10 operating system itself remains supported; Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 have separate lifecycles.
Bottom line for your budget
Check activation and Windows 11 compatibility before spending money. An activated compatible PC should normally move to Windows 11 for $0. A dependable but incompatible Windows 10 22H2 PC can use ESU—currently no additional charge under one route, 1,000 Rewards points, or $30 plus tax—as a temporary bridge through the current stated end date. For an unlicensed custom PC, price a legitimate Windows 11 Home or Pro license at Microsoft’s live checkout. Do not buy an old Windows 10 key or used laptop solely because it looks cheap.
