A commonly cited online estimate puts Willie Mays’s net worth at $8 million. That number comes from a celebrity-estimate website, not from an official statement of his assets, and no audited, probate, or tax record was found that confirms it. Treat $8 million as a publisher’s estimate, not a verified fact.
Mays died on June 18, 2024, at age 93, so any figure published today describes a estate that has passed through or is passing through settlement. The public record of that process is thin, which is why the estimate is worth examining closely before anyone repeats it.
Where the $8 million figure comes from
The figure is published by Celebrity Net Worth, a third-party website that estimates the wealth of public figures. The site states that its estimates draw on public sources and may incorporate private tips it receives. Its page for Mays does not show the calculation behind the number, so readers cannot see which assets were counted, what debts were subtracted, or what valuation date was used. The figure was accessed in 2026, and the site gives no methodology showing how it arrived at $8 million for Mays specifically.
That makes the estimate a reasonable starting point for a search, but not a financial statement. Nothing in the reviewed material shows a balance sheet, an appraisal of property or collectibles, or an accounting of estate liabilities behind it.

What official sources confirm
Official baseball sources document Mays’s career, his contracts with the New York Giants, and his later role with the club. They do not disclose his personal finances. The following facts are established:
- Early signing terms. The National Baseball Hall of Fame says the young Mays signed with the New York Giants for $250 per month and a $4,000 signing bonus. These are historical contract terms from the start of his career. They describe what he was paid at the outset, not what he earned over his life or what he owned.
- A lifetime contract in 1993. The Giants’ official biography says the team announced a lifetime contract for Mays in 1993. The biography describes an ongoing organizational and community role but gives no dollar amount.
- Date of death. The Hall of Fame records that Mays died on June 18, 2024, at age 93.
The Hall of Fame’s announcement of his death includes a tribute from Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the Board of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, who said that Mays’s “passion for the game and incredible talent made him the embodiment of baseball for millions of fans and one of the most beloved players in history.” That is a statement about his legacy, not about his wealth.

Why the career earnings figures do not settle the question
The same estimator’s page contains two different career totals, and the conflict is one reason the page cannot be used as a ledger. The table below separates each figure from what it actually measures.
| Figure | Source | What it measures | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| $8 million | Celebrity Net Worth (accessed 2026) | Estimated net worth, as a publisher’s estimate | Not independently verified; no calculation shown |
| $1,148,467 | Celebrity Net Worth (accessed 2026) | Career salary-and-contract total | Conflicts with the $1.9 million figure on the same page |
| $1.9 million | Celebrity Net Worth (accessed 2026) | “Total Earnings” in the career-earnings section | Conflicts with the $1,148,467 figure on the same page |
| $250 per month and a $4,000 signing bonus | National Baseball Hall of Fame (undated page, accessed 2026) | Early signing terms with the New York Giants | Historical contract terms; no publication date given |
| Lifetime contract announced in 1993 | San Francisco Giants (official biography, accessed 2026) | Existence of a lifetime contract | Dollar amount not stated |
Two points follow from the table. First, the two career totals cannot both be right, so neither should be presented as settled lifetime earnings. Second, even an accurate career-earnings total would not produce a net worth. Net worth is what a person owns minus what they owe at a given moment. Income is money received over time, and a large income can be spent, taxed, given away, or lost to debt. Career salary is a history of what was paid, not a measure of what remains.

What the IRS wealth statistics can and cannot show
Some articles about wealth point to the Internal Revenue Service’s Personal Wealth Study to support individual estimates. That study is an aggregate statistical project built from estate-tax returns and limited to a defined population. It can describe how wealth is distributed across groups of decedents. It cannot confirm the net worth of any single person, including Mays. Using it to validate $8 million would be a category error.
What remains unknown
The reviewed sources do not include any of the following for Mays:
Rank #4
- A probate inventory listing estate assets
- A federal or state tax return
- A trust accounting or statement of estate liabilities
- An authoritative appraisal of real estate, investments, or personal property
Memorabilia auction results do not fill the gap. A sale of selected objects shows what those items brought at auction on a given date. It does not show the value of everything Mays owned, and it does not account for debts, taxes, or fees. Readers should not infer a higher or lower estate value from auction prices alone.

When you see a number like $8 million, check it against four questions:
Best Value
- Stock Photo displayed. Actual item may vary.
- NY Giants
- Willie Mays
- Source quality. Is the figure drawn from a primary financial disclosure or an audited estate record, or from an estimator that labels its own numbers as estimates?
- Measurement. Does the figure measure net worth, or is it career gross pay, property value, auction proceeds, or later estate revenue?
- Date. Was the estimate made during the person’s life, or does it describe value at death or later estate activity?
- Method and scope. Are assets and liabilities itemized? Does the figure cover an individual, a household, or an estate?
Applied to Mays, the $8 million figure fails most of these tests. It is an estimate from a third party, it is not labeled as net worth in the official record, its date and method are unstated, and it cannot be broken into assets and liabilities. Until a verified estate record or primary disclosure becomes public, the most accurate statement is that a commonly cited estimate places his net worth at $8 million, and that the estimate has not been independently confirmed.
