Celebrity Net Worth lists it at $50 million, but that figure is a third-party estimate—not a confirmed or audited disclosure. The available reporting also includes a historical, reportedly high-paying CSI contract; it does not establish Petersen’s current assets, debts, or net worth.
How much is William Petersen worth?
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Petersen’s net worth at $50 million. The site says its net-worth calculations are estimates, and no authoritative personal financial disclosure or audited figure was identified in the sources reviewed. Treat $50 million as an estimate attributed to that publisher, not a verified account of his finances. Celebrity Net Worth’s William Petersen profile
Net worth means assets minus liabilities. A published estimate is not the same as a salary figure: reported pay describes compensation for work over a period, while a net-worth estimate would require a much broader picture of finances.
What is known about Petersen’s CSI salary?
In 2008, TV Guide reported that Petersen’s renewed CSI contract was reportedly worth $600,000 per episode for the 2008–09 season, up from a reported $500,000. The report attributed the amount to an unnamed CSI insider and said the deal’s specifics were not disclosed. It is historical salary reporting, not a public contract filing or evidence of his current wealth. TV Guide’s 2008 report

That per-episode figure cannot be multiplied into a reliable lifetime-earnings total: the reported contract terms are incomplete, and salary alone does not show taxes, expenses, investments, liabilities, or other income.
How did CSI shape his career?
Gil Grissom became Petersen’s best-known role. A July 2010 Los Angeles Times profile said he had appeared in more than 190 CSI episodes at that point. The article also reported that he left after season nine’s tenth episode to pursue stage acting. That episode count is a historical count from the profile, not a current total for the series. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s profile documents Petersen’s work across film, television, and theater, including To Live and Die in L.A., Manhunter, Fear, and The Contender. It also notes that he remained an executive producer after departing CSI. TV Insider’s profile likewise describes his producer role on the series.
TV Insider reported that 23 million viewers watched Petersen’s final CSI episode; the page does not state a publication date for that figure. It conveys the episode’s audience, not Petersen’s earnings or the value of his estate.

In an interview excerpt attributed by CSI Files to Entertainment Weekly, Petersen explained his departure by saying, “The reason I’m leaving is because I’m afraid I’m becoming too comfortable.” That comment describes his reason for leaving the series, not his finances. The sources cited here do not establish Petersen’s present assets, liabilities, investments, property holdings, or income from work beyond the reported historical contract. There is no basis in them to verify the $50 million estimate, calculate his lifetime earnings, or derive a current net worth from his reported CSI pay.
