Subscription-only FSD (Supervised) can make a Tesla less valuable to a buyer who wants the feature, because a seller generally cannot pass along an active subscription and the buyer may face a new monthly bill. That creates a risk of weaker resale value, not a known or guaranteed dollar loss: no source cited here publishes a controlled estimate of FSD’s average resale premium or discount.
What changed when FSD became subscription-only?
Tesla says FSD (Supervised) is available only by subscription, not outright purchase. Its support page listed the price at $99 USD per month as of September 29, 2026. A buyer who wants access generally has to subscribe through their own Tesla Account; the seller’s subscription is not a transferable, perpetual feature of the car.
The change matters for resale because a prospective buyer may compare two costs: the car’s purchase price and the continuing cost of access to FSD. If that buyer values the feature, the subscription could affect what they are willing to pay for a car that does not already have a qualifying purchased entitlement. How much it affects an offer depends on the buyer and the specific vehicle; there is no published formula that converts the subscription price into a resale discount.
FSD (Supervised) is a driver-assistance feature, not autonomous driving. Tesla says it “does not make your vehicle autonomous,” and that these features do not replace the driver. Drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control.

Does FSD transfer when you sell a Tesla?
It depends on how access was obtained and whether the car qualified for Tesla’s earlier transfer program. Tesla says that program ended on March 31, 2026. The cases below are not interchangeable, so verify the entitlement on the actual vehicle rather than relying only on a listing or a seller’s recollection.
| How the current owner got FSD | What the next owner should expect | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Owner has an active subscription | The subscription itself generally does not pass to the buyer. Tesla says the buyer must subscribe through their own Tesla Account. | Confirm whether the vehicle has a separate purchased entitlement; do not treat the seller’s subscription as included access. |
| FSD was bought outright and remains on the vehicle | Tesla’s FAQ says the buyer receives FSD if the previous owner bought it outright and did not transfer it to a new vehicle. Special Luxe Package treatment can vary by purchase date. | Check the vehicle’s software screen and Tesla account records, and confirm any package or purchase-date conditions with Tesla. |
| FSD was transferred under Tesla’s program | Tesla says that after a qualifying transfer, FSD stays with the new vehicle if it is sold to a third party. The transfer cannot be reversed. | Confirm the transfer was completed for that vehicle. Tesla’s program applied to qualifying customers who took delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026. |
For a used-car purchase, have the seller show the feature status on the car’s software screen and obtain any relevant Tesla account records before agreeing on a price. A listing that says “FSD” may refer to active subscription access, an outright purchase, or a completed transfer; those do not give the buyer the same rights.

How much could subscription-only FSD affect resale value?
The evidence supports a directional risk, not a fixed dollar estimate. A buyer who does not want FSD may place little or no value on the ability to subscribe. A buyer who does want it may account for the future subscription cost when comparing cars, but that is a market inference from Tesla’s account-based rules, not a published appraisal method.
For scale, 36 months at Tesla’s listed $99 monthly price equals $3,564. That is an arithmetic example of subscription payments at the price listed on September 29, 2026—not a forecast of a three-year ownership cost, a resale discount, or a price guarantee. The actual cost could differ if the monthly price changes, the owner subscribes for fewer months, or access is unavailable for the vehicle or region.

Do not use the original FSD purchase price as a resale-value estimate. The Associated Press reported that Tesla cut the upfront price from $12,000 to $8,000 in April 2024, before later removing outright purchase as an option. Those changing prices show why the amount a prior owner paid does not establish what a later buyer will pay for the car.
Subscription versus historically purchased FSD
The main financial difference is whether the seller can transfer a vehicle-linked entitlement, rather than how much the prior owner spent. A subscription is a recurring expense for the subscribing account; a qualifying purchased entitlement may remain with the vehicle, subject to its history and Tesla’s applicable terms.

| Consideration | Subscription access | Historical outright purchase or qualifying transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Cost over the holding period | Recurring. At Tesla’s $99 monthly price listed September 29, 2026, 36 months would total $3,564 if that price remained unchanged and the owner subscribed each month. | The prior owner’s payment is sunk for a later buyer and does not determine the car’s current resale value. Tesla’s outright FSD price was reported by the Associated Press as $8,000, reduced from $12,000 in April 2024. |
| Can access pass to the next owner? | The seller generally cannot hand over their subscription; the buyer must subscribe through their own account. | Tesla says a buyer receives FSD if it was bought outright and not transferred to a new vehicle. A completed qualifying transfer stays with the transferred vehicle when sold to a third party. |
| Expected buyer access | Requires a new subscription by the buyer, subject to vehicle and regional eligibility. | May already be included with the car, but the vehicle’s entitlement and any purchase-date or package conditions need verification. |
| Exposure to policy or price changes | Future subscription price and availability are subject to Tesla’s policies. | Transfer eligibility and treatment depend on the vehicle’s history and Tesla’s terms; do not assume a past purchase gives every vehicle the same status. |
The right comparison for an owner is not “subscription cost versus the amount I can recover at sale.” It is the cost of the months of access the owner expects to use versus the uncertain value of having an entitlement that a particular next buyer may value. For a subscription, assume no resale recovery unless Tesla’s terms for the exact vehicle establish that a separate purchased entitlement is present.

Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K reported $3.599 billion in deferred FSD-related revenue at year-end 2024 and $1.343 billion in additions to that balance during 2024. These are company-level accounting figures, not estimates of the value of FSD on an individual used Tesla or the discount a buyer will demand.

- Compatible with Tesla Model X Mar 2021-June 2025, Model S Feb 2021-June 2025
Separately, TechCrunch reported in October 2025 that Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja said 12% of Tesla customers had paid for FSD. That is a reported company figure, not an independently audited resale statistic. Neither number establishes how many used-car buyers value FSD or how much they would pay for a vehicle with it.
What to check before buying or selling
If you are selling
- Identify whether the vehicle has a subscription, an outright-purchased entitlement, or a completed transfer. Do not describe subscription access as a permanent feature included with the car.
- Check the vehicle’s software screen and relevant Tesla account records so you can substantiate what access, if any, will remain with the vehicle.
- Price the car against comparable vehicles with the same model, year, configuration, hardware and market. Treat any FSD-related premium as buyer-specific rather than assuming you will recover what you paid.
If you are buying used
- Ask whether FSD is an active subscription or a vehicle-linked entitlement, and have the seller demonstrate the status in the car.
- Confirm account and transfer history with Tesla, especially if the seller says the car has purchased FSD or came through a transfer.
- Check whether the car’s configuration, hardware, software version, model year and region support the feature you expect. Tesla says availability varies across those factors.
- Work out the cost at the current listed rate only as a starting point. Decide whether your expected use justifies recurring payments, recognizing that future prices and eligibility can change.
Is FSD worth paying for if you plan to sell in three years?
For a subscription, base the decision on your own expected use during those three years, not on recovering the payments at resale. At the $99 monthly price Tesla listed on September 29, 2026, subscribing every month for three years would total $3,564 if the rate did not change; subscribing only in months when you want access would produce a different total. Neither calculation tells you how much the car will be worth when you sell.
If you are evaluating a car that already has purchased FSD, treat that as a potentially useful feature of the specific vehicle, then verify its status and account history. The original owner’s purchase is not a promise that a later buyer will pay a matching premium. More broadly, resale value still depends on the vehicle’s condition, model, configuration and market, so FSD is only one possible part of the buyer’s decision.
