Re:

Will Trump’s Tariffs Affect Nintendo Switch 2 and Other Consoles?

Nintendo acknowledged tariff uncertainty when it delayed U.S. Switch 2 preorders in 2025. Its reported 2026 price increase, however, was attributed to broad market conditions—not specifically to tariffs.

Yes, tariffs have affected console plans, but there is no evidence here that they caused Nintendo’s 2026 Switch 2 price increase. Nintendo delayed the planned U.S. preorder start in April 2025 while assessing tariff impacts. The temporary 10% U.S. import surcharge that began in February 2026 was scheduled to end July 24, and was no longer in force on October 8, 2026. A reported Switch 2 price increase took effect September 1, but Nintendo’s quoted explanation cited broad market conditions rather than tariffs specifically.

What happened to Switch 2 pricing and preorders?

Nintendo paused U.S. preorders in April 2025

Nintendo said U.S. Switch 2 preorders would not begin on the originally planned April 9, 2025 date so it could assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” The company said the console’s June 5, 2025 launch date was unchanged. That is direct evidence tariff uncertainty influenced preorder timing then; it does not establish a later price effect. Tom’s Hardware reported Nintendo’s statement on April 4, 2025.

The reported U.S. price rose in September 2026

PC Gamer reported that the U.S. Switch 2 price increased from $449.99 to $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo of America described the change as a response to “various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term.” That explanation does not identify tariffs as the specific cause, so the price change should not be presented as a tariff-driven increase. PC Gamer’s May 8, 2026 report quotes Nintendo’s explanation.

What tariffs were in effect in 2026?

The temporary 10% surcharge had an end date

A February 2026 White House proclamation imposed a 10% ad valorem import surcharge for 150 days beginning February 24, with the stated period running through July 24, 2026. It had ended by October 8, 2026; it should not be described as a current surcharge on that date. This does not establish that every other tariff provision was absent or that every console shipment entered duty-free. Read the White House proclamation.

A U.S.–China announcement did not create a console exemption

On September 27, 2026, the White House said the United States and China would consider listed products for possible reduced tariff treatment through their domestic processes. The release does not establish that consoles were included or that a tariff rate changed. The U.S.–China Board of Trade release describes possible consideration, not a confirmed console carve-out.

Why a console’s actual import duty is hard to infer

The U.S. International Trade Commission publishes the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), which sets tariff classifications and rates. Its archive lists 2026 HTS Revision 20, published September 28, 2026. Because the schedule and additional trade measures can change, the applicable current revision and Chapter 99 provisions need to be checked for a specific entry. Check the USITC HTS archive or search the current HTS.

A 2026 Customs and Border Protection ruling search result describes the general video-game-console provision and reports a Free base rate. That base rate alone does not determine total duty for a particular shipment: additional measures, country of origin, classification and entry details can matter. It is not a basis for claiming all consoles enter the United States duty-free. See CBP ruling N359605.

The available sources do not establish the country of origin of Switch 2 inventory currently sold in the United States. Without that information and the shipment’s applicable tariff treatment, a reader cannot calculate a specific tariff cost from the console’s retail price.

What this means if you are deciding whether to buy

  • Do not assume a new tariff-driven price increase is imminent. The reported September 2026 price change is real, but Nintendo’s quoted explanation did not single out tariffs.
  • Do not assume the expired surcharge is still being charged. Its stated period ended July 24, 2026, though other tariff provisions may apply to particular imports.
  • For a console price comparison, check the current U.S. retail price, the country of origin of the particular unit, and the tariff rules applicable to that import. A base tariff rate is not necessarily the complete duty calculation.
