Possibly, but no console tariff or price increase has been confirmed. Reuters reported on August 27, 2026, that the administration was considering tariffs that could extend beyond semiconductor chips to finished products such as gaming consoles. The reported proposal is not a final policy, and its rate, timing and effect on U.S. prices are unknown.
What has actually been announced?
In January 2026, the White House issued an action addressing imports of certain semiconductors and related products. The action and its accompanying fact sheet also raised the possibility of broader tariffs, potentially in the near future. Those official semiconductor-related measures are distinct from the later report about possible duties on finished goods.
On August 27, 2026, Reuters reported that Politico, citing eight people familiar with discussions, said the administration was considering a new round of semiconductor tariffs. One approach under consideration could extend duties to products that use chips, including gaming consoles, laptops and data center servers. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report and that the framework could be substantially revised.
Are gaming consoles definitely included?
No. The report identifies consoles as a possible category in deliberations; it does not establish that consoles will be covered by a final tariff schedule. The White House response, quoted by Reuters from an unnamed official, was: “Unless officially announced by the Administration, any reporting about tariffs should be regarded as baseless speculation.”

- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The available reporting does not specify whether a policy would cover every console, particular models, or products from particular countries. It also does not establish a console-specific rate, effective date, exemption or phase-in. Reuters reported that a phase-in was among possible terms, not a settled provision.
What could tariffs mean for console prices?
If a future policy covered imported consoles or components used in them, it could raise costs somewhere in the supply chain. Whether that cost reached shoppers, and by how much, would depend on the final product scope and rate, country-of-origin rules, exemptions, existing inventory, and how manufacturers and retailers set prices.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
A tariff rate would not automatically translate into the same percentage increase on a console’s shelf price. The current reporting provides no basis for forecasting a specific price increase—or for saying that prices will rise at all.

A formal announcement or tariff schedule would be needed to determine the consumer impact. Look for these details in any confirmed policy:
Rank #3
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Products covered: whether duties apply only to chips or also to finished consoles and which product classifications are included.
- Country-of-origin rules: which origins are affected and how the rules apply to finished products and components.
- Rate and effective date: the actual duty and when it begins.
- Exemptions or transition terms: whether particular products qualify for relief or receive a phase-in.
- Retail pricing: whether console makers or retailers change U.S. prices after the terms are known.
Until those terms are announced, a claim that a particular console is covered or will cost a specific amount more is speculation, not an established consumer cost.
