Will the PSX Maintain Its Upward Trend? KSE-100, IMF Review and Investor Optimism

The KSE-100 was higher in early trading on October 8, but weekly and September declines temper the rally. Here’s what the reported IMF agreement and investor figures do—and don’t—signal.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) was higher in early trading on October 8, 2026, but the latest rise does not yet establish a sustained upward trend. At 09:49:07 Pakistan time, the KSE-100 stood at 169,061.52, up 481.12 points (0.28%), according to the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Recent gains followed declines in the preceding week and September, while the IMF agreement linked to buying interest was still subject to Executive Board approval in reporting that morning.

Latest KSE-100 reading: higher intraday, not a closing record

PSX’s live summary showed the KSE-100 at 169,061.52, up 481.12 points or 0.28%, at 09:49:07 on October 8, 2026. This is an intraday reading, not the day’s closing level. A Business Recorder report at 09:50 put the index at 168,978.36, up 397.96 points (0.24%). The small difference reflects separate observation times during an open session.

The KSE-100 is a broad benchmark rather than a measure of every Pakistani investor’s results. PSX says it covers all market sectors, represents 85% of the exchange’s market capitalization, and is calculated using free-float market capitalization methodology. Individual portfolio returns can differ substantially depending on holdings, timing, fees and other factors.

Why the recent rise does not prove a lasting trend

The October 8 advance came after a strong rebound on October 6, but the wider recent record was mixed. The index’s climb should therefore be described as a short-term move, not a confirmed continuing trend.

Period KSE-100 performance Source and context
October 8, 09:49:07 169,061.52; up 481.12 points (0.28%) intraday PSX live summary; open-session snapshot
October 6 session Closed at 168,460; gained 2,593 points (1.56%) Dawn, citing Topline Securities
Week ending around October 2 Closed at 168,155; down 2,610 points (1.5%) week on week Dawn, citing Arif Habib Ltd
September 2026 Down 7,006 points (3.96%) Dawn, citing Topline Securities
FY2026 KSE-100 return of 43.52%; about 46.40% in US dollars PSX profile; exchange profile data dated August 31, 2026
July–March FY2026 Up 18.4%, from 125,627 to 148,743; reached 189,167 on January 23, 2026 Pakistan Economic Survey 2025–26; momentum faded in early February amid uncertainty and geopolitical tensions

These figures cover different periods and, in some cases, different currencies. The FY2026 return and the July–March increase do not cancel out the September and weekly declines; nor do they tell investors what the index will do next.

What the IMF review means—and what remains pending

Business Recorder reported on October 8 that IMF staff and Pakistani authorities had reached a staff-level agreement covering the fourth review of the $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the third review of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). The report said the agreement remained subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board. A staff-level agreement is not a Board decision and does not, by itself, confirm a completed disbursement.

The IMF’s most recent official release relevant to Pakistan identified here was dated May 8, 2026. It said the Board had completed Pakistan’s third EFF review and second RSF review, enabling approximately US$1.1 billion under the EFF and US$220 million under the RSF, and bringing total disbursements under the two programs to about US$4.8 billion. Those were earlier reviews, not confirmation of the October agreement or any financing under it. See the IMF’s May 8 release.

The October agreement’s final Board outcome and any disbursement amount were not confirmed in the available official IMF material at the time of the October 8 reporting. Investors should distinguish market expectations around a review from a formal IMF approval and a verified transfer of funds.

Why investors may be optimistic—and what the numbers can’t show

Market coverage connected buying interest around the October 6 rebound and October 8 trading with expectations surrounding IMF talks and the reported staff-level agreement. That timing is not proof that the IMF development caused the gains, or that the market will continue rising. Prices also reflect investors’ changing expectations and other economic and political factors.

Pakistan’s Press Information Department reported that Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb cited 25,281 new investors joining PSX in September 2026, described as the highest monthly total, bringing the investor base to 656,218. The figures indicate reported growth in participation; they do not establish investor sentiment, the amount invested, or the direction of future share prices. The government release is available from the Press Information Department.

How to read the PSX outlook as an individual investor

  • Check whether a quote is live or final. An intraday gain can reverse before the market closes.
  • Match performance figures to their time window. A daily move, a monthly decline and a fiscal-year return describe different things.
  • Separate expectations from confirmed events. A reported staff-level agreement is not equivalent to Board approval or a disbursement.
  • Do not treat index performance as a personal return forecast. The KSE-100 is a benchmark; your result depends on your portfolio and decisions.
  • Recognize uncertainty. A rebound after losses can mark a change in momentum, but one or two sessions cannot establish that a new upward trend will persist.
