Re:

Will the Future Games Industry Favor Two Consoles? What the Evidence Shows

The games industry may reward platform scale and cross-device reach, but current company disclosures do not establish that exactly two consoles will dominate.

Possibly—but the available evidence does not establish that the games industry will converge on exactly two winning consoles, or identify which two they would be. It does show why scale, loyal audiences, publisher economics and access beyond a single device matter. It also suggests that “console” may become a less complete way to describe a platform: Xbox says it is building continuity across console, PC, mobile and cloud, while its next announced hardware project is intended to play both Xbox console and PC games.

What does it mean for the industry to favor two consoles?

“Favor” could mean that most players buy one of two dedicated machines, that publishers prioritize two platform ecosystems, or that two companies capture most of the industry’s revenue and engagement. Those are different outcomes. A company can extend its audience across PC and cloud without selling another console, and a publisher’s dependence on console sales does not reveal which console makers will dominate.

The evidence available here supports a discussion of platform scale and strategy, not a firm prediction of a two-console market. It contains no verified industry-wide market-share statistic or independent forecast establishing exactly two future leaders. Nintendo is also a material missing comparison, so naming a winning pair would go beyond the evidence.

What the current evidence says about platform scale and business

Evidence What it establishes What it does not establish
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported more than 95 million cumulative worldwide PS5 hardware units sold in by June 30, 2026. Sony reported 125 million PlayStation monthly active users on that date, an estimate based on its research. PlayStation has substantial hardware reach and user engagement by Sony’s reported measures. Hardware sell-in is not the same as the number of active devices, and the user estimate is not a console-unit count. Neither figure predicts the future number of leading platforms.
In its 2026 reporting, Take-Two Interactive Software said console revenue represented 38.7% of its net revenue for the nine months ended December 31, 2025. The company also described increased consolidation in a highly competitive industry. Console revenue remains important to this publisher, and platform transitions and competition are relevant business risks. This is one publisher’s revenue mix, not the console share of the whole games market or a prediction that two consoles will prevail.
Electronic Arts estimated that 78% of its unit sales on Xbox One/Series and PlayStation 4/5 were digital in fiscal 2025. Digital distribution was significant for EA’s sales on those named systems. The estimate is limited to EA and those platforms; it is not an industry-wide digital-sales figure or a measure of console market share.
In an April 23, 2026 Xbox Wire strategy article, Xbox said console is the foundation of its premium experience while cloud extends that experience across devices. Xbox also said Project Helix is intended to play Xbox console and PC games, with alpha hardware for developers planned to begin shipping in 2027. Xbox’s stated strategy reaches beyond a conventional console-only model, and the company has announced a development plan for future hardware. These are company statements and plans, not independent evidence of future sales, market leadership or a guaranteed hardware schedule.

Why the two-console forecast is plausible—but unproven

Scale can make a platform harder to displace

A large installed audience can make a platform attractive to publishers, while a strong catalogue can give players reasons to stay. That feedback loop is a plausible mechanism for concentration: publishers want to reach large audiences, and players benefit when platforms offer the games and services they want. Sony’s reported figures illustrate the scale one incumbent platform has achieved, but they do not show that the market will narrow to two.

Publisher exposure is not a winner count

Console revenue matters to publishers, but a publisher’s financial statements answer a different question from a console-market forecast. Take-Two’s reported mix indicates exposure to console business; it cannot show how revenue is divided among console makers or whether a particular publisher could shift activity if players moved elsewhere. Likewise, EA’s digital-sales estimate says something about how EA distributes its own games on specified generations of Xbox and PlayStation hardware, not how many platforms will remain important.

Platforms may compete across devices, not only consoles

Xbox’s published strategy explicitly describes cloud access across devices and continuity across console, PC, mobile and cloud. If that approach succeeds, competition may increasingly concern access to a broader ecosystem rather than a contest over only two boxes under televisions. Project Helix’s stated intention to support both Xbox console and PC games points in that direction, but the plan is not evidence of its eventual adoption or commercial performance.

What to watch before treating “two consoles” as a forecast

  • Comparable platform data: Look for dated hardware sales or installed-base measures for all major console makers, including Nintendo. Do not treat one company’s active-user estimate as directly comparable with another company’s hardware units.
  • Publisher disclosures over time: Check whether console exposure is rising or falling across multiple publishers and reporting periods. One company’s revenue mix is not a market-wide share.
  • Access beyond hardware: Track whether players can use the same ecosystem across console, PC, mobile or cloud, and whether publishers support those routes. Company strategy statements should be distinguished from demonstrated results.
  • Evidence of concentration: A claim that two platforms dominate would need comparable market-wide measures and a defined metric—such as hardware sales, active users, game spending or publisher revenue. These measures answer different questions.

What this means for players, publishers and investors

For players

Do not assume the market will leave only two relevant choices when deciding where to play or buy games. A platform’s current reach is not a guarantee of future support, and cross-device plans can change how a service competes without making every device interchangeable.

For publishers

A concentrated market could make access to major audiences commercially important, while dependence on a small number of platforms can expose a publisher to platform transitions and competition. The available company disclosures show why console economics matter, but do not quantify a universal ideal number of platforms or establish which ones will be strongest.
