Re:

Will Microsoft’s Next Layoffs Target Middle Managers? What’s Confirmed

Microsoft’s 2025 cuts focused partly on reducing management layers, but its July 2026 announcement did not confirm a future company-wide middle-manager layoff round.

Microsoft has not publicly confirmed another company-wide layoff wave targeting middle managers. The possibility draws on a real precedent: reporting on the company’s May 2025 cuts said Microsoft was focused on reducing the number of managers. Its July 2026 announcement confirmed about 4,800 role eliminations and said further organizational changes lay ahead, but did not identify middle managers as a future target.

Will Microsoft lay off middle managers?

There is no public confirmation of a future company-wide round aimed at middle managers. Microsoft’s July 6, 2026 employee communication announced cuts already underway and anticipated further changes, but did not say what jobs or teams might be affected next. That leaves a possible future target unconfirmed—not ruled out, but not an announced plan.

The middle-management framing has a documented basis in earlier reporting, but it should not be conflated with a new announcement. The distinction is important: past cuts focused partly on reducing management layers, while the latest company statement did not name managers as a target for future eliminations.

What has Microsoft confirmed about its latest layoffs?

On July 6, 2026, Microsoft EVP and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman said the company was eliminating around 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce. She said the changes fell mostly in Commercial and Xbox and reflected shifting customer needs and business priorities. Coleman also wrote that other parts of the company would need to make similar changes. Microsoft’s employee communication did not specify a future middle-manager target.

Coleman said, “I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI.” She separately noted that AI is changing how work gets done. Her statement therefore does not support describing these July eliminations as jobs replaced by AI.

Xbox figures are not a company-wide manager forecast

The July cuts included 1,600 Xbox workers, according to the Associated Press. AP also reported that Microsoft expected another 1,600 Xbox job cuts over the fiscal year. That outlook is specific to Xbox; it is not a forecast of additional company-wide cuts or evidence that middle managers are the target. The AP report describes the Xbox context.

Why is the middle-manager possibility being discussed?

On May 13, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Microsoft had begun laying off about 6,000 workers, nearly 3% of its workforce. AP said the cuts spanned levels, teams, and geographies, while the company focused on reducing the number of managers. It also reported that CFO Amy Hood had described building high-performing teams and increasing agility by reducing layers and having fewer managers. AP’s May 2025 coverage is evidence of that round’s management-reduction focus—not proof of a later target.

A separate headline from The Information, “Microsoft to Cut 3% of Staff, Targeting Middle Management,” names Aaron Holmes as author, but the accessible page does not provide enough of the article to establish the basis, timing, or scope of a new future wave. The headline alone should not be treated as confirmation from Microsoft. The Information’s page is the available reference for that headline.

How the announced cuts and future claims differ

Date Organization or scope What the source says Status
May 13, 2025 Microsoft workforce AP reported about 6,000 cuts, nearly 3% of the workforce, with a focus on reducing the number of managers. Reported cuts and management-reduction focus in 2025; not confirmation of a later target.
July 6, 2026 Microsoft, mainly Commercial and Xbox Microsoft said around 4,800 roles, about 2.1% of its global workforce, were being eliminated and that other parts of the business would need similar changes. Company-announced eliminations and anticipated organizational changes; no future middle-manager target named.
July 6, 2026 Xbox AP reported 1,600 Xbox workers among the July cuts and another 1,600 Xbox job cuts expected over the fiscal year. Xbox-specific reporting; not a company-wide manager forecast.
Future, timing not established Potential company-wide middle-manager cuts The Information headline raises the possibility, but the accessible article does not establish its evidence, timing, or scope. Unverified possibility, not a publicly confirmed Microsoft plan.

What should employees and investors take from this?

Microsoft’s public statements support two separate conclusions: management-layer reductions were part of the 2025 cuts, and the company announced substantial role eliminations in July 2026 while signaling more organizational changes ahead. They do not establish that the next company-wide round will target middle managers, when such a round might occur, or how many roles it might affect.

For employees, a broad statement that other parts of the company may change is not enough to identify which roles are at risk. For investors, the announced figures describe distinct events and scopes; they should not be added together as though they represent one planned round or used to calculate a future manager-cut target. Microsoft’s FY2026 10-K filing record, dated July 29, 2026, does not independently resolve whether future cuts will target middle managers. The filing record provides no confirmation of that specific claim.
