The World Gold Council (WGC) reported that gold fell 8.5% in September 2026, ending the month at US$4,176 per ounce, as US yields and the dollar rose and COMEX futures positions contracted. That is a historical month-end figure, not a live price for 11 October. The WGC’s latest cited commentary, published 7 October, explained September’s move but did not issue a new numeric price forecast.
What happened to gold prices in September?
Gold ended September 2026 at US$4,176 per ounce, down 8.5% from August, according to the WGC’s analysis of data through 30 September. The Council associated the decline with rising US Treasury yields and a stronger dollar, alongside a sharp reduction in COMEX futures positions. Its commentary is a review of September, not a quote for the current spot price. World Gold Council, September 2026 commentary.

- The US 10-year Treasury yield rose 53 basis points to 5.3% during September, while the US Dollar Index (DXY) gained 2%.
- Net managed-money COMEX positions fell by US$12 billion, or 84 tonnes. Total spreading positions fell by US$22 billion, or 156 tonnes.
- Global gold-backed ETFs nevertheless recorded net inflows of US$10 billion, equivalent to 67 tonnes.
Those flows show why “investors sold gold” is too simple an explanation. Futures exposure declined while ETF holdings increased; they are different channels of demand and can move in opposite directions.
Why might gold fall further?
High yields can make gold less attractive
Gold does not pay interest. When yields rise, especially real yields (yields adjusted for inflation), the opportunity cost of holding gold can increase. If Treasury yields remain elevated or markets expect tighter monetary policy, that could weigh on gold. The WGC’s Q2 outlook also noted that Western ETF flows can respond to real yields, rate expectations and the dollar. It cautioned, however, that a rate increase is not automatically negative for gold. World Gold Council, Q2 2026 outlook, 30 July 2026.

A stronger dollar can add pressure
Gold is commonly priced in US dollars, so a stronger dollar can make it more expensive for buyers using other currencies and can dampen demand. September’s 2% DXY rise coincided with the decline, but the WGC analysis does not make the dollar the sole cause.
Further futures liquidation could deepen a decline
COMEX position reductions were part of September’s move. If futures investors continue to cut exposure, selling pressure could persist. Futures positioning is only one part of the market, though; September’s ETF inflows and other forms of demand complicate any claim that all investors are leaving gold.

Strong growth and calmer markets are a downside scenario
In its 1 July mid-year analysis, the WGC identified resilient economic growth, rising yields and calmer markets as a combination that could put gold under pressure. This is a conditional scenario based on information available through 26 June, not a current target or a prediction that the conditions will occur. World Gold Council, mid-year outlook, 1 July 2026.
What could help gold recover or hold up?
Economic or geopolitical stress
Worsening economic or geopolitical conditions could support demand for gold, while a shift toward lower interest-rate expectations could ease the headwind from yields. The WGC’s July scenario analysis identified these as possible catalysts for renewed strength; they do not guarantee a recovery.

Investment and official-sector demand
The WGC’s Q2 outlook expects investment to remain the main driver of demand growth for the rest of 2026, with OTC activity and Asian investment playing larger roles and central banks remaining significant buyers. In Q2, total gold demand was flat year on year at 1,269 tonnes, while central banks and other official institutions bought a net 289 tonnes, up 62% year on year. Jewellery demand fell 17% year on year.
Demand estimates can change. The WGC reported that Metals Focus revised its Q1 2026 estimate of official-sector demand from 244 tonnes to 57 tonnes, reclassifying 187 tonnes as OTC and other demand. That revision is a reminder that demand categories and estimates matter when interpreting market data. World Gold Council, Q2 2026 demand report.

ETF flows can diverge by market
September’s global ETF inflows contrasted with declining COMEX positions. The WGC also reported that UK-listed gold ETFs attracted 54 tonnes in Q3, compared with about 18 tonnes predicted by one model. The Council suggested fiscal concerns may have contributed, but emphasized the short sample; fiscal concerns are a possible explanation, not an established cause. What is the gold price forecast?
The latest numeric price outlook in the sources cited here is the WGC’s 1 July 2026 scenario analysis. If its macroeconomic consensus held, it said gold could remain within about 5% above or below US$4,100 per ounce through the second half of 2026. Its upside scenarios could take gold toward US$4,500 per ounce; stronger downside was possible under resilient growth, rising yields and calmer markets.

These were hypothetical scenario outcomes based on data available through 26 June—not guaranteed predictions. September’s 8.5% decline occurred after that analysis, so its ranges should not be read as current targets. The WGC’s 30 July Q2 outlook discussed demand and market sensitivities, while its 7 October commentary described September’s drivers without providing a fresh numeric forecast. When assessing a forecast, check its publication date and data cutoff, assumptions about yields and central-bank policy, expected dollar direction, growth and geopolitical conditions, and the demand measure it uses. A price scenario is not the same as a demand forecast: ETF flows, futures positions, OTC activity, physical bars and coins, and central-bank purchases describe different parts of the market.
How should an investor interpret the dip?
September’s fall was substantial, but it does not by itself settle whether gold will keep falling. The clearest near-term pressure points in the WGC’s latest commentary are elevated Treasury yields, dollar strength and any further contraction in futures positions. Potential supports include investment demand, official-sector purchases, lower rate expectations and renewed economic or geopolitical stress. Which forces dominate is uncertain.
Gold can be volatile, and a scenario is not a promise. The WGC says hypothetical outcomes are not guarantees and past performance does not assure future results.
