Possibly, but the $11 billion figure is not a forecast that your ticket will cost more. It comes from United CEO Scott Kirby’s March 20, 2026 message describing what United’s annual jet-fuel expense would be if prices stayed at the level he was discussing. Airlines can respond to higher fuel costs with fare increases, fees, or fewer flights, but the effect varies by route and carrier. Available figures do not establish a single nationwide fare increase.
What does the $11 billion figure mean?
On March 20, 2026, United published a message from CEO Scott Kirby stating: “If prices stayed at this level, it would mean an extra $11B in annual expense just for jet fuel.” The condition matters: this was a company-specific, annualized scenario tied to fuel prices at that time—not a confirmed expense, an industry-wide total, or a prediction that fares would rise by a particular amount. United’s March 20 message gives the original context.
There is also a separate $11 billion estimate in coverage of major domestic airlines collectively. The Washington Post attributed that estimate to Alex Jacquez of Groundwork Collaborative. It is not the same claim as Kirby’s conditional United estimate, so the two should not be combined or treated as interchangeable. The Washington Post report presents that separate attribution.
What later fuel-cost figures show
Subsequent figures document higher fuel spending, but they use different periods and baselines. They measure airline fuel costs, not ticket prices.

The March and April BTS totals reflect both fuel prices and how much fuel airlines used. They cannot tell you how much a particular ticket changed. United’s July outlook is later, but it is not a direct correction of the March figure: it compares anticipated 2026 expense with a start-of-year expectation, while the March statement described an annualized scenario if prices remained at a then-current level.
How higher fuel costs can affect ticket prices and flight choices
Fuel is one airline cost, and a carrier’s response depends on its finances, demand, competitors, route economics, and exposure to fuel prices. Reporting during 2026 described several possible responses rather than one uniform outcome:

- Higher fares: United planned to cut unprofitable flying amid elevated fuel costs, while strong demand had helped U.S. carriers raise fares. Reuters’ report on United describes the planned capacity response and fare environment.
- Fees and ancillary charges: carriers adjusted ticket prices and charges such as checked-bag fees, according to the Associated Press. That reporting is evidence of responses by carriers, not proof that every airline added a fee. The AP report covers those changes.
- Schedule changes: flights that are no longer profitable may be cut, reducing the available choices on some routes or dates. This does not mean all airlines will reduce service in the same way.
Fuel pressure is not captured perfectly by crude-oil prices alone. IATA’s Q2 2026 chartbook reported that jet-fuel prices rose more than crude prices amid simultaneous crude-supply and refinery-capacity pressures, weighing on airline performance across regions. There is no supported percentage increase to apply to every U.S. ticket, and the available reporting does not establish an October 2026 nationwide, route-by-route fare trend. For a real booking decision, compare the actual options for your trip rather than using an airline fuel-cost figure as a fare calculator:

- Check the same route and travel dates across carriers, while noting differences in departure times and connections.
- Look at schedule availability as well as price; a reduced or changed schedule can affect which flights remain practical.
- Recheck fares and terms before buying. Fuel-cost reports alone do not establish whether a specific fare will rise or when.
