Malaysia’s electric-vehicle market grew sharply in 2023, while its semiconductor strategy identifies EV power chips as a potential supply opportunity. But the available official sources do not confirm a current forecast that EV sales will boom, or show that a semiconductor task force has already caused sales to rise. The connection is a policy opportunity—not proof of a sales projection.
What Malaysia’s EV sales figures show
Malaysia recorded 13,257 new battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in 2023, up from 3,127 in 2022, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). That is strong historical growth, but the figures describe two completed years; they do not establish that the same pace continued or predict future sales.
BEVs are fully electric vehicles. The figures should not be read as a count of every electrified vehicle category, such as hybrids, or as a forecast for 2026 and beyond.
What the semiconductor strategy has to do with EVs
EVs rely on power semiconductors to manage and convert electrical energy. MITI’s National Semiconductor Strategy presents the expanding global EV market as an opportunity for Malaysia to supply power chips used in EVs and other energy-transition technologies. The strategy says: “The growth of the global electric vehicle (EV) market presents an opportunity for Malaysia to become a key hub for supplying power chips to EVs, which are crucial for energy transition and decarbonisation technologies.”

This is an industrial-supply ambition. It does not mean that Malaysia has secured a particular share of EV-chip demand, nor does it directly predict how many vehicles Malaysians will buy. The strategy places the opportunity within broader policy efforts, including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
Malaysia’s semiconductor trade and policy targets
MITI’s 2024 annual report records RM655.13 billion in semiconductor trade for 2024. Exports accounted for RM387.95 billion and imports for RM267.18 billion. The report says the government introduced the National Semiconductor Strategy in May 2024 to strengthen the semiconductor value chain through research-driven innovation, expanded production capacity and targeted talent development.

Trade totals show the scale of the sector, not how much of that trade is specifically tied to EVs or power chips. The strategy’s aims describe a direction for industrial development; the figures do not establish that its targets have already been achieved.

The official sources cited here provide the 2022–2023 BEV sales comparison and explain the semiconductor opportunity, but they do not establish a current official Malaysian EV sales forecast for 2026 and beyond. A January 2024 TechTimes report covered the announcement of a national semiconductor task force and the then trade and industry minister’s comments on semiconductor ambitions and EVs; that report does not substitute for an official sales projection.

For a personal-finance decision, the distinction matters: the historical increase is evidence of past adoption, while future sales depend on factors these sources do not quantify. The semiconductor strategy may support domestic supply-chain development, but it is not enough by itself to forecast vehicle demand or determine how quickly EV ownership costs will change.
