In 2025, CD sales and wholesale revenue fell year over year, even as total physical music revenue rose, driven by vinyl. Whether an individual CD has resale value depends on its exact edition, condition, completeness, and actual completed sales—not on a broader revival of physical music.
What does “valuable” mean for a CD?
The question can mean three different things: whether CDs will remain a viable format, whether they are useful to own and play, or whether a particular copy could sell for a high price. Industry sales data can indicate demand for the format; it cannot establish the resale price or future appreciation of a specific disc.
For a personal-finance decision, treat listening value and collectible value separately from investment return. The available U.S. market figures show that CDs still sell in substantial numbers, but they do not establish that a typical CD will rise in value.
What the latest U.S. CD figures show
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reports that U.S. CD sales totaled 29.5 million units and $312.4 million in wholesale value in 2025. Compared with 2024, CD units fell 11.6% and wholesale value fell 7.8%. These are industry-level figures, with revenue measured at wholesale value, net after returns—not consumer retail prices or secondhand transactions. RIAA Year-End Recorded Music Revenue Report ’25

| U.S. format or category | 2024 | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| CD units | 33.3 million | 29.5 million | Down 11.6% |
| CD wholesale value | $338.9 million | $312.4 million | Down 7.8% |
| Vinyl units | 43.4 million | 46.8 million | Up |
| Vinyl wholesale value | $954.4 million | $1,042.9 million | Up |
| Total physical music wholesale value | $1,315.5 million | $1,381.0 million | Up 5.0% |
All figures in the table are RIAA U.S. industry figures for the stated calendar year; revenue is wholesale value, net after returns. They are not retail prices or resale values. The contrast matters: total physical music revenue grew in 2025 while CD revenue declined, with vinyl accounting for the larger and growing share of the formats shown.
Why a physical-music resurgence does not guarantee CD appreciation
A rise in total physical music revenue does not mean every physical format is growing, and rising sales do not automatically translate into higher resale prices. The RIAA’s 2025 figures describe new-format industry sales, not the market for used CDs. They do not track what collectors paid for a particular release, how many copies changed hands, or whether prices rose over time.

An album’s cultural importance or a renewed interest in physical ownership may support demand for some editions, but neither establishes a reliable investment forecast. The RIAA data is limited to the United States and to aggregate units and wholesale revenue. It does not establish worldwide demand, future appreciation, or prices for individual copies.
How to assess a specific CD’s resale value
Evaluate the particular copy rather than assuming that all CDs share the same prospects. Start with the release and pressing details, then compare like with like.

- Identify the exact edition. Record the artist, title, label, catalog number, country or region, release year, and any pressing or edition details that distinguish it from other versions.
- Check condition and completeness. Note the disc’s playback condition and the state of the case, booklet, inserts, and any other included items. A listing for a complete copy is not a direct comparison for an incomplete one.
- Look for completed transactions. Compare sales of the same edition and similar condition. Seller asking prices show what someone hopes to receive, not what a buyer has paid.
- Account for selling costs and uncertainty. If you are deciding whether to buy as an investment, consider fees, shipping, the time needed to find a buyer, and the possibility that a listed price will not be achieved.
No verified transaction histories or price estimates are available here for named CDs, so a specific price range or list of supposedly valuable titles would not be well supported.
What an older U.S. comparison can—and cannot—tell you
RIAA’s first-half 2024 report recorded 17 million U.S. CD units and $237 million in CD revenue, compared with 24 million vinyl units and $740 million in vinyl revenue. It also said vinyl had outsold CDs by unit count for the fourth consecutive year. Those figures describe the first half of 2024 only; they are not a substitute for the latest full-year comparison. Should you buy CDs as an investment?
The current evidence is not a basis for expecting a typical CD to appreciate. If you buy CDs to listen to, keep a collection, or enjoy owning physical media, those benefits may be worthwhile on their own. If potential resale matters, research the exact edition and completed sales before paying a premium, and do not treat general interest in physical music as proof of a likely financial return.
