Zomato’s March 2024 “Pure Veg” announcement drew criticism because it paired a food-curation feature with a proposed separate delivery fleet in green uniforms. Critics argued that the language of “purity” can evoke caste-linked food hierarchies, while colour-coded uniforms could expose riders to exclusion or harassment. Zomato said it was addressing customer preferences; after the backlash, it dropped the green-uniform distinction and said all riders would wear red.
What Zomato announced
In March 2024, Zomato introduced Pure Veg Mode, describing it as a way for customers with a strict vegetarian preference to find restaurants that serve only vegetarian food. The announcement also proposed a separate delivery fleet, whose riders would wear green uniforms. CEO Deepinder Goyal presented the idea as a response to customer feedback about how vegetarian food was cooked, handled and delivered.

In an explanation reported from his March 19, 2024 social-media announcement, Goyal said: “India has the largest percentage of vegetarians in the world, and one of the most important feedback we’ve gotten from them is that they are very particular about how their food is cooked, and how their food is handled.” This is the statement as reproduced in coverage; a directly accessible primary post was not available to independently verify its wording. Scroll.in reported the announcement and criticism.
Why critics called it casteist
Critics focused on the distinction between serving vegetarian food and publicly marking workers according to the kind of food they carried. In India, they argued, “pure” vegetarian language can draw on social ideas of purity and pollution associated with caste hierarchy. A company-run service using that language, they said, could give those ideas added legitimacy. This was criticism of the policy’s language and possible social effects, not a legal finding or proof of discriminatory intent by Zomato.

The green uniforms raised a separate, practical concern. Workers’ representatives and others warned that a visibly distinct fleet could make riders carrying non-vegetarian orders easier to identify, potentially exposing them to exclusion or harassment by housing societies. That risk mattered even though Zomato’s stated purpose was to serve customers seeking particular food-handling arrangements.
These objections do not mean that every vegetarian preference is casteist or that caste alone explains why people choose vegetarian food. The criticism was about how the service’s wording and visible worker distinction might interact with existing social hierarchies.

What Zomato changed—and what the reports do not establish
Within about a day of the announcement, Goyal said the company would drop green uniforms and that all delivery partners would wear red. Zomato cited the risk that riders could be wrongly associated with non-vegetarian food and blocked by residential associations. The Indian Express reported the uniform rollback.
The reported change was to the uniform distinction. It does not establish that Zomato withdrew Pure Veg Mode, nor do the cited reports verify the feature’s current availability or operating rules. The app’s food curation and the proposed on-street separation of riders were distinct parts of the announcement; the coverage documents the rollback of the latter.

How the food-consumption figures fit the debate
NFHS-5 covered 2019–21, and the Government of India announced the release of its national report in May 2022. An analysis of that survey by The Indian Express reported that 83.4% of men and 70.6% of women aged 15–49 said they consumed fish, chicken or meat daily, weekly or occasionally. Those figures describe the survey’s age group and listed food categories; they are not a measure of how many Indians eat meat regularly, the share of all Indians who are vegetarian, or anyone’s caste identity. The Indian Express explains the NFHS-5 figures. The government’s announcement and the final report are available from the Press Information Bureau and the International Institute for Population Sciences and ICF.
