“Out for Delivery” means UPS has dispatched your package from a local facility to a driver for the final delivery leg. It does not mean the driver has reached your address or promise delivery by a particular hour. If the package does not arrive, check its tracking details for a new status or delivery date; UPS says it will try again the next business day when it cannot deliver a package with this status.

How late might UPS deliver?
UPS’s U.S. guidance gives different general delivery windows: its tracking FAQ says drivers may deliver as late as 9 p.m., and possibly later during the holiday season. Its status page describes typical residential delivery as 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., occasionally later, and commercial delivery by close of business. These are general service descriptions, not an appointment or guaranteed arrival time for an individual package. Timing can vary by service, season, and location.

The status alone does not identify why the package has not reached you. UPS’s public guidance does not give a definitive list of causes for every shipment that remains marked “Out for Delivery.” Avoid assuming that a particular problem—such as an address issue, a route delay, or a missed scan—has occurred unless the shipment’s tracking details or UPS confirms it.

If tracking changes to “Exception,” UPS says an unexpected issue may affect the scheduled delivery date. Open the shipment’s progress details to see the stated reason and any revised date.
What to do next
- If it is still the expected delivery day: Check the shipment on UPS tracking for updates. UPS describes tracking as its most up-to-date source for package status.
- If the day ends without delivery: Keep checking the shipment’s tracking details. UPS says that when it cannot deliver a package showing “Out for Delivery,” it will try again on the next business day. That is the general U.S. guidance; follow any shipment-specific update for your package.
- If an “Exception” appears: Open Shipment Progress and read the reason and any updated delivery date rather than guessing what happened.
- If you find a delivery notice: Follow the directions on that notice, which may relate to an unsuccessful delivery or pickup attempt. If there is no notice, UPS says it may need more delivery information. Eligible recipients can provide information through UPS My Choice.
- If you need to change the delivery arrangement: Check the available options through UPS My Choice or its one-time guest process. Options depend on package eligibility, and the sender may restrict changes. Details are available through the UPS Help and Support Center.
If tracking says “Delivered” but you cannot find the package
That is a different situation from a package still marked “Out for Delivery.” Check around exterior doors, porches, patios, garages, and other possible safe drop-off spots. Ask household members or nearby neighbors whether they brought it in or received it. If it remains missing, UPS advises contacting the seller to start a claim. Its tracking support page outlines these steps.

Which tracking detail changes what you should do?
- Still “Out for Delivery”: Monitor the tracking page; the status is not confirmation of delivery.
- “Exception” with a stated reason or date: Use the Shipment Progress details for the package-specific update.
- Delivery notice left: Follow the notice’s instructions.
- No notice and more information may be needed: Check whether UPS My Choice offers an eligible way to provide it.
- Marked “Delivered” but not found: Check likely drop-off locations and ask others nearby; then contact the seller if it is still missing.
