Why Your FICO Score Changed: Common Causes and How to Check Your Credit Reports

A FICO score is a point-in-time calculation. Learn how balances, payment history, new credit, aging, bureau timing and score models change the number—and follow a step-by-step process to compare reports and dispute errors.

A FICO score can change whenever the information, timing, bureau file, or scoring model behind the calculation changes. A payment you made may not be reflected until the lender reports it; a different bureau may hold a different balance; or two services may be showing different FICO versions—or a non-FICO score. The number is a point-in-time calculation, not a permanent rating.

Before treating a change as an error, record the bureau, score brand, model or version, report date, and score-generation date. Then compare the underlying account data on all three credit reports. If a report contains information that is genuinely inaccurate or incomplete, document it and dispute it with both the reporting bureau and the company that supplied the information.

What a FICO score measures—and why it can move

A FICO score is calculated from the credit-report information available when the score is requested. The calculation can therefore change when an account balance, payment status, inquiry, account age, or other report entry changes. You can see a different number even when you have not taken a new action, because creditors report on their own schedules and a newly requested score may use a fresher file than an earlier score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The score is not a live account balance and it is not a single, universal number. Each credit bureau maintains its own file, and lenders or consumer services can request different FICO models. A non-FICO score is also calculated differently and should not be compared directly with a FICO score as if they were interchangeable.

The practical question is not simply “Did the number change?” It is “Did the same bureau, model, and reporting snapshot produce a different result, and what changed in that file?”

Check whether you are comparing the same score

Many apparent score drops are comparison errors. Write down these details for every displayed score before trying to explain a difference:

Detail Why it matters What to record
Score brand FICO and other scoring brands use different calculations. Whether the display explicitly says FICO.
Bureau Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion may receive different data or receive it at different times. The bureau named on the score or report.
Model or version Different FICO generations and industry versions can weigh the same report differently. The model or version shown, if provided.
Report date The underlying file may be a snapshot from a different day. The date the bureau report was current.
Score-generation date A score requested later may include an update that was absent from an earlier score. The date and time, if shown, when the score was calculated.
Product type A lender’s score can differ from a consumer-facing score even when both use FICO branding. Where the score came from and whether it is a lender, card, or monitoring display.

For a meaningful before-and-after comparison, match the bureau and model as closely as possible. If either is different, describe the numbers as different scores, not proof that one score rose or fell.

Why did my FICO score go down?

A lower score usually reflects a change in reported data or a different calculation context. The same event can have different effects for different credit profiles, so no responsible source can promise a fixed point impact.

Higher reported balances or credit utilization

Credit-card issuers commonly report balances on a schedule that does not necessarily match your payment date. You may pay a card today, but the bureau can continue displaying the previous balance until the issuer sends an update. A higher balance relative to the card’s credit limit can then affect the score when the new data is incorporated.

Conversely, a payment can lower utilization only after the reduced balance is reported. Check each revolving account’s reported balance and limit, not just the total amount you currently owe. A limit reduction can also raise utilization even if your spending did not increase.

A newly reported late payment or serious event

A late payment, collection, bankruptcy, or another serious status change can alter the payment-history portion of the file. Its effect depends on the rest of the profile, the severity and recency of the event, and the scoring model. Do not assume that one event always costs a standard number of points.

Check the account’s payment grid, current status, date reported, and any remarks. A payment that was actually on time but reported late is an item to document and dispute; a late payment that is accurate generally cannot be removed merely because it lowered the score.

New accounts and hard inquiries

Opening a new account changes the age and mix of accounts and can create a hard inquiry. Several applications in a short period can therefore affect the same FICO version over time. A promotional or account-review inquiry may be treated differently from a hard application inquiry, so inspect the inquiry section rather than assuming every listed inquiry has the same significance.

Verify that every new account and inquiry belongs to you. An unfamiliar entry can be a reporting mistake, a fragmented file, or possible fraud; it is a reason to investigate, not proof of identity theft by itself.

Accounts aged or information left the file

Credit reports change as accounts become older and older entries leave the file. A late-payment entry reaching a seven-year mark and an inquiry aging past one year are examples discussed in myFICO educational guidance, but those examples are not a universal rule for every item or situation. The applicable period can depend on the type of information and current law.

An account becoming older can help one part of a profile, while the removal of an older account or a particular payment-history entry can change the overall calculation in an unexpected direction. Compare the before-and-after report details instead of assuming that “older” always means “higher.”

An account was closed or paid off

Closing a card can remove available credit from the utilization calculation or leave less active revolving credit, even if the account’s history remains on a report. Paying off an installment loan can also change the mix of open accounts. The result depends on the complete file, so “paid off” does not guarantee a score increase and “closed” does not guarantee a decrease.

Look for the account’s status, balance, credit limit, closure date, and whether another account’s limit or balance changed at the same time.

The bureau received an update at a different time

Creditors do not all report to every bureau on the same day. One bureau may show a new balance or payment while another still shows the previous month’s information. A score based on the older snapshot can differ from a score requested after the update, even when your behavior between the two requests was unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The score model or brand changed

The same report can produce different numbers under different FICO versions. Mortgage, auto, and credit-card decisions may use industry-specific or lender-selected versions rather than the version shown in a consumer product. A non-FICO score is not directly comparable with a FICO score. Record the model and brand before attributing a difference to your credit behavior.

Your file is mixed, fragmented, or incomplete

Differences in names, addresses, account numbers, or other identifiers can cause information to be attached to the wrong file or omitted from one bureau’s file. A report might therefore contain an account you do not recognize, or fail to show an account that appears elsewhere. Investigate unfamiliar information carefully; do not label it identity theft without reviewing the details and contacting the appropriate parties.

Why did my credit score change when nothing changed?

“Nothing changed” often means nothing changed in your own actions. Reporting and calculation events can still change the displayed score:

  • An issuer sent a scheduled balance update after you checked the score.
  • A payment or account status was reported to one bureau before another.
  • An inquiry or new account was added after an application you made earlier.
  • An item aged or was removed from the bureau’s current file.
  • The service refreshed the score using a different report date, bureau, or model.
  • A lender corrected, deleted, or re-reported information without you making a new payment.

Use the report dates to build a timeline. Note when the score was generated, when each account was last updated, and when the balance, status, inquiry, or account age changed. A score can move between two checks even if your bank activity and spending were identical during that interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are my FICO scores different between bureaus?

Each bureau keeps a separate file. Creditors may report to all three, only some, or at different times, and the files can contain different balances, limits, payment histories, inquiries, collections, or public-record information. Even if the files look similar, the scores can differ when the models or report dates differ.

What differs What to inspect
Data coverage Whether the same accounts, limits, balances, payment history, collections, and public-record entries appear.
Update timing Each account’s “date updated” or equivalent field.
Identity matching Names, addresses, employers, account identifiers, and duplicate or merged accounts.
Scoring context Brand, model/version, product type, report date, and score-generation date.

Do not average the three numbers or choose the highest one as the “real” score. Match the score context first, then identify the specific file difference that explains the variation.

How do I check my credit reports?

Use the official AnnualCreditReport.com route named by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for checking your reports. The exact availability and access terms can change, so read the current instructions on the service when you request them. You do not need to buy a monitoring subscription to inspect reports or dispute an error.

  1. Record the score details. Save or print the score screen and note the provider, FICO or other brand, model/version, bureau, report date, and score-generation date.
  2. Request the reports. Obtain the reports available from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion through the official route. Save each report as a file or paper copy, including the date obtained.
  3. Confirm identity information. Check names, addresses, employers, and identifying details. Correct identity mismatches because they can contribute to mixed or incomplete files.
  4. Inventory every account. For each account, record the creditor, account type, opening date, current status, credit limit, balance, payment history, last-reported date, and closure date if applicable.
  5. Review inquiries and new accounts. Separate applications you authorized from entries you do not recognize. Note the date, company, and bureau on which each appears.
  6. Check collections and public-record information. Confirm ownership, balances, dates, status, and whether duplicate entries describe the same obligation.
  7. Compare the three files side by side. Mark information present on one bureau but absent or different on another. Differences are common; they become important when they explain a score discrepancy or contain an error.
  8. Build a change timeline. Match the account update dates to the dates of the scores you are comparing. Allow for lender reporting schedules rather than expecting a payment to appear immediately.

Which report details matter most to a score change?

Report area Questions to ask Evidence to save
Revolving balances Did a balance or credit limit change? Is the displayed balance different from your current balance? Statements, payment confirmations, and the report page showing the limit and balance.
Payment history Is any account newly late, in collection, charged off, or otherwise changed? Statements, notices, and records showing the actual payment date.
New credit Did a new account or hard inquiry appear? Application records and correspondence from the creditor.
Account age and status Was an account opened, closed, paid off, or removed? Account-opening or closure notices and prior report copies.
Collections or public records Do you recognize the item, amount, dates, and owner? Debt records, court documents where relevant, and communications.
Personal identifiers Could another person’s information be mixed into your file? Identification and address records that establish the correct information.

Keep the report version that showed the earlier data. Without a prior copy, you may still compare current bureau files and account statements, but proving when a field changed can be harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I find an error on my credit report?

Dispute only information that is inaccurate or incomplete. A correct negative entry is not an error simply because it lowered your score. For an inaccurate item, prepare a clear record and contact both the bureau displaying it and the company that supplied the information.

1. Identify the exact factual problem

State what is wrong: an account is not yours, a balance or limit is incorrect, a payment was reported late even though it was on time, an account is duplicated, or a status or date is incomplete. Refer to the creditor name and the account number’s last digits shown on the report.

2. Gather supporting documents

Include copies—not irreplaceable originals—of statements, payment confirmations, account-closure letters, identity documents when appropriate, or other records that establish the correct facts. Organize the documents so each attachment matches one disputed field.

3. Send the dispute to both parties

Submit the dispute to each bureau that reports the error and to the information furnisher, such as the lender or collection company. Follow the submission instructions shown by each organization and keep a complete copy of the dispute, attachments, submission date, and confirmation number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Track the investigation

myFICO’s error guidance says bureau investigations are usually completed within 30 days unless the dispute is considered frivolous, but timing can vary. Keep the response, note what was changed or left unchanged, and obtain an updated report when the investigation is complete.

5. Recheck the score only after confirming the file

A corrected report does not guarantee a specific score increase. The calculation still uses the rest of the file, and another bureau or model may contain different information. Confirm that the inaccurate field was corrected, then compare a score generated under the same bureau and model as your earlier score.

How to handle an unfamiliar account or inquiry

An unfamiliar entry can result from a reporting error, a file-matching problem, or fraud. Start by checking the creditor name, account-opening date, address, balance, and any contact information on the report. Contact the creditor through a verified channel and dispute the entry with the bureau that displays it. If the evidence indicates an account was opened fraudulently, follow the identity-theft and fraud-reporting instructions provided by the creditor, the bureaus, and appropriate government agencies.

Do not assume that deleting an unfamiliar item will raise the score by a predictable amount. The result depends on what the item is and what other data remains on the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you pay for score or report monitoring?

Paid services are optional. A monitoring product may provide recurring score access, alerts, one-time reports, or ongoing bureau monitoring, but it does not replace reviewing the underlying reports or disputing inaccurate information. Before enrolling, compare the service on these points:

  • FICO or another score brand.
  • Which bureau reports are included.
  • The exact model or version used.
  • How often reports and scores refresh.
  • Whether alerts cover new accounts, inquiries, balances, or identity changes.
  • The current price, renewal price, cancellation terms, and geography of availability.

Use a paid product only if its features and renewal terms fit your needs. The essential actions—obtaining reports, inspecting them, documenting errors, and disputing inaccurate information—do not depend on a subscription.

When a score change deserves urgent attention

  • A large, unexplained change appears alongside a new account, inquiry, collection, or address you do not recognize.
  • A creditor reports a late payment despite documentation that the payment was timely.
  • The same account appears with conflicting balances, limits, ownership, or dates.
  • A report is missing accounts or information that another bureau shows and the difference affects an imminent application.
  • A lender’s score and a consumer score differ because the lender used a different model, and you need to know which factors that model evaluates.

In each case, preserve the reports and score details first. Then investigate the underlying entry rather than reacting to the headline number alone.

A simple maintenance routine

  1. Keep a dated copy of each bureau report you obtain.
  2. Review revolving balances and limits after major payments or limit changes, allowing time for reporting.
  3. Check new accounts and inquiries after every credit application.
  4. Read account-status and payment-history updates, not just the total score.
  5. Dispute factual errors promptly and retain every response.
  6. When comparing scores, always record the brand, bureau, model, report date, and score date together.

This routine makes an unexplained movement traceable: you can determine whether the cause was a real change in the file, a reporting delay, a different bureau, or a different scoring calculation.
