A Xiaomi SU7 dealership in Shanghai reportedly scheduled test drives until 3 a.m. on March 30, 2024, as interest surged after the electric sedan’s launch. That late-night rush was a striking scene at one store—not proof that every Xiaomi dealership stayed open all night or that every visitor placed an order. The launch figures tell a broader story, but orders, locked-in orders and delivered cars are different measures.
What happened at the Shanghai dealership?
CarNewsChina reported on March 31, 2024, that a Shanghai dealership manager said test drives were scheduled until 3 a.m. the previous night. The same report put the number of people visiting that dealership to see the car or book a drive at about 10,000. That is a single-store estimate, not a national count, and the visitors were not all necessarily test drivers or buyers. CarNewsChina’s account of the dealership is the source for the 3 a.m. detail.
The scene followed the SU7’s launch in China and reflected unusually intense early attention. It does not, by itself, show how many cars Xiaomi sold: showroom traffic and test-drive appointments measure interest, while completed deliveries measure vehicles handed over.
How many people ordered the SU7?
Xiaomi announced 50,000 orders in the first 27 minutes after sales opened in China, according to the Associated Press’s March 28, 2024 coverage. Within the first 24 hours, the company announced 88,898 “firm orders.” CnEVPost reported that Xiaomi clarified this total included both refundable orders and orders that customers had locked in, so the headline figure should not be read as 88,898 completed sales—or as 88,898 irreversible commitments. At launch, buyers could generally cancel during a seven-day hesitation period unless they locked their configuration, after which the deposit became non-refundable and production followed, CnEVPost reported. Thus the first-day “firm orders” figure was a measure of early customer commitments under Xiaomi’s ordering rules, not a final tally of cars that would be delivered.
Orders versus deliveries: what the later numbers show
Xiaomi’s 2024 annual report recorded 136,854 SU7-series deliveries during 2024. The company later reported that cumulative SU7-series deliveries passed 500,000 by August 17, 2026. Those are delivery figures, not launch orders; they also cover the SU7 series over time rather than just the initial 2024 launch cohort. These numbers answer different questions. The first two show how quickly buyers responded to the launch announcement; the latter two show vehicles delivered over a year and across a longer period. They should not be added together or described interchangeably as “sales.”
Why the story is still relevant—and what changed in 2026
The late-night test-drive report is a March 2024 snapshot. CnEVPost also reported at the time that stores were receiving 90–120 people a day seeking test drives and that new bookings faced a three-to-five-day wait. Those were launch-period conditions, not current wait estimates.

Xiaomi launched a new-generation SU7 in March 2026, a separate model launch from the original 2024 introduction. The company said locked-in orders for the new generation passed 15,000 in 34 minutes and 30,000 within three days. Its annual report listed China-market starting prices of RMB219,900 for Standard, RMB249,900 for Pro and RMB303,900 for Max. These are reported starting prices for China, not a quote for another market; the new-generation order tally should not be combined with the original model’s launch figures. The market context is also specific. Xiaomi’s 2024 annual report said it had 200 EV sales centers in 58 mainland China cities at year-end 2024; its 2025 annual report reported 477 centers in 138 mainland China cities at year-end 2025. The 2026 interim report said the SU7 ranked first by sales volume among pure-electric sedans priced above RMB200,000 in mainland China for the first half of 2026, citing BitAuto data through June 30. That ranking is limited to a defined vehicle segment and geography, not a global comparison.

What a prospective buyer should take from the frenzy
The launch demonstrates strong initial interest and substantial subsequent deliveries in mainland China. It does not establish that the SU7 is available to buy in any particular country outside that market. A prospective buyer should check Xiaomi’s current official ordering information for their location rather than infer availability or delivery timing from a 2024 queue, a historical booking wait, or a China-market price.
