A July 22, 2024 report said lawyers for Rina Oh Amen were trying to obtain data from two X accounts she could not access, and that X’s lawyers directed them to ask Amen for the information. The dispute arose in a civil defamation case between Amen and Virginia Giuffre—not in an Epstein criminal prosecution and not in a case against Elon Musk personally. The sources reviewed do not establish whether X ultimately produced the data.
What information did the subpoena seek?
The July 2024 report described subpoenas seeking information from Oh Amen’s X accounts. According to the report, one account had been suspended and she was locked out of another. Her lawyers therefore could not retrieve the account information themselves. X’s lawyers reportedly responded by telling them to ask Amen for the data.

Those details are the report’s account of a discovery dispute; they are not findings in a court order. The reviewed sources do not specify the full categories of data requested, such as whether the subpoenas sought messages, account records, or other material.

How did this relate to the case between Amen and Giuffre?
The case was Amen v. Giuffre, No. 1:21-cv-08839, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Rina Oh Amen was the plaintiff and Virginia Giuffre the defendant. In a March 7, 2024 order, U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald described the suit this way: “in this action, plaintiff alleges in an amended complaint that defendant defamed her in several posts on Twitter (now known as X).” That language describes an allegation in the pleadings, not a judicial finding that defamation occurred.

The account-data request was part of discovery in that civil suit. The reported dispute was not a claim that X or Musk participated in Epstein’s crimes, nor was it a lawsuit against Musk personally.
What did X reportedly say, and was it ordered to comply?
The July 22, 2024 report said the parties’ lawyers had been exchanging discovery materials and that Giuffre’s counsel asked the judge to begin the process of compelling X to comply. It also quoted Amen’s lawyer, Alexander Dudelson, saying, “If they complied, ultimately, I could set a trial date and get this matter resolved.”

The report described a request to start a process; it does not establish that a motion to compel was granted or that a court ordered X to turn over the information. The reviewed sources also do not establish whether X later produced it. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that X defied a court order or that the subpoena dispute was resolved.

In its March 7, 2024 order, the court said the pleadings included a nonparty’s name, and that person’s counsel had asked for it to be redacted. Judge Buchwald ordered the relevant filings permanently sealed and directed the parties to redact the nonparty’s name from future public filings. That order shows that protecting sensitive identities was a concrete concern in the litigation.

The Department of Justice’s Epstein Disclosures page separately says victim names and identifying information have been redacted, while warning that sensitive information may inadvertently remain online because of the volume of material. That general warning is not evidence about X’s conduct in this separate case.

A court order dated June 10, 2025 denied a summary-judgment motion without prejudice, granted a motion to seal, and directed defense counsel to file a status report every sixty days concerning Giuffre’s estate after her death. The docket listing for that order was last retrieved on June 10, 2025. It does not establish the case’s status after that date or answer what happened to the account-data subpoenas.
