What United changed in May 2025
The Associated Press reported that United’s reduction took effect May 3, 2025, and represented about 10% of United and United Express’s round-trip domestic Newark schedule. The change applied to United’s schedule; it did not mean that every airline at Newark cut 35 daily flights. Associated Press coverage
Why United said it cut flights
United CEO Scott Kirby cited chronic air traffic controller understaffing and recent air traffic control technology failures. In his account, the FAA told United that Newark could not handle the airline’s scheduled volume in the coming weeks and months. The FAA separately said there was a nationwide controller shortage and that it had for years not met its staffing goal for the area serving Newark. The agency said Newark arrivals and departures were handled by the Philadelphia TRACON after Newark airspace control moved from New York TRACON in 2024. How the FAA’s later Newark limits differ
After United’s May schedule change, the FAA issued an order in June 2025 limiting operations at Newark amid capacity, staffing and equipment concerns. In September 2025, it announced a limit of 72 hourly operations, with no more than 36 arrivals and 36 departures, through October 24, 2026. FAA announcement of the September 2025 limits
A later FAA order, dated June 23, 2026, extends operating limitations through October 30, 2027, effective October 25, 2026. It retains a target of no more than 36 scheduled arrivals and 36 departures per hour during covered hours. The FAA cites continued staffing deficiencies and the need to onboard and train controllers. What this means if you are flying from Newark
The historical United reduction and the FAA’s airport-wide limits do not establish whether a particular flight is operating, delayed or canceled. Check your reservation and the airline’s current flight-status information for your itinerary; use the FAA’s Newark updates for airport-level operational notices. The FAA order is not a live status report for an individual flight.
