Why United Airlines Still Relies on the Boeing 777-300ER: What the 2025 Fleet Data Shows

United still flies the 777-300ER because it is its largest-capacity long-range widebody, with 350 seats and 22 aircraft at year-end 2025. Here is what the airline says, what the numbers show, and what remains unknown.

United Airlines keeps flying the Boeing 777-300ER because it is the largest-capacity long-range widebody in its fleet, it is used on high-demand international routes, and its replacement is arriving later than the airline had hoped. United’s own July 2024 investor filing gives those reasons, and its year-end 2025 fleet table shows 22 of the aircraft still in service. United has not published a retirement date for the type.

What United says the 777-300ER does for its network

United’s July 2024 investor filing is the clearest statement of the airline’s reasoning. It makes four points about the type:

  • Capacity: United calls the 777-300ER its largest-capacity long-range widebody. It describes a three-class configuration with 350 passengers.
  • Route role: The filing says the aircraft serves high-demand international routes to key markets in Europe, Asia and Oceania.
  • Cabin products: United cites its Polaris and Premium Plus cabins as part of the aircraft’s value proposition.
  • Cargo: The filing says the aircraft’s large belly cargo capacity is positive for freight economics.

Taken together, these points explain why the aircraft suits long, busy international flying. They do not show how profitable any individual route is, and United does not publish that breakdown in the material available.

The 777-300ER fleet at year-end 2025

United’s year-end 2025 fleet table is the most recent official count available. The figures below are a snapshot as of December 31, 2025. They do not show whether the number stayed constant through the year.

Maximum cargo volume 7,120 cubic feet United Airlines investor filing, July 2024. This is a design specification, not a measure of cargo actually carried or cargo revenue.
Type in service worldwide More than 750 aircraft across more than 40 operators Cited by United in its July 2024 filing from Cirium and Ascend market data for Q2 2024. This is market context, not a 2026 total.

Eight years is a fairly young average age for a widebody type that has been in service since the 2000s, which fits with United still treating these aircraft as core equipment rather than spare capacity.

Why the belly cargo matters to the economics

Passenger seats are only part of an international widebody’s earnings. Belly cargo can add meaningful revenue on long routes, and United lists the aircraft’s cargo volume as one of its strengths. The 7,120-cubic-foot figure tells you how much space the aircraft can hold. It does not tell you how much cargo United sells on any given route, so it cannot be used to estimate freight income by itself.

The unit-cost claim and what it does not prove

The same filing calls the 777-300ER the largest Boeing 777 subfleet type and says it offers “superior unit costs.” That is United’s own characterization. The material available does not include a route-level or subfleet-level cost comparison that tests it independently. Treat the claim as the airline’s view of its own fleet, not as a verified finding about operating costs.

Why replacement is slower than expected

A reasonable explanation for why United keeps an older type flying is that the successor is not ready in volume. Two facts support that reading:

  • United’s 2024 filing said delays in 777-9 production had brought 777-300ERs back into long-haul service across the market.
  • Boeing’s year-end 2025 outlook expected the first 777-9 delivery in 2027, after certification delays.

Putting these together, a delayed successor reduces near-term replacement certainty. This is an inference from the two facts above, not a United plan. United has not disclosed a date to retire or replace the 777-300ER, and the material does not establish one.

How the 777-300ER compares with the 787-10 and 777-9

The three types play different roles, and the sources do not support a full cost comparison among them. The table shows what is established for each.

Routes: what to verify before you book

A United business-travel schedule result listed SFO to NRT as a daily 777-300ER route. That page returned an error when opened, so the listing is not reliable evidence of a 2025 schedule. Route assignments change, so check them yourself before relying on any particular route:

  1. Search the flight on United’s website for your exact travel date.
  2. Open the flight details and note the aircraft type shown for that flight number.
  3. If the aircraft type matters to you, check the seat map for the cabins you plan to book.
  4. Recheck the aircraft type a few days before departure, since equipment can be swapped.

What this means for your travel budget

The 777-300ER is useful for a traveler mainly as a reminder that cabin products vary by aircraft. United cites Polaris and Premium Plus as part of this type’s value, but the material available does not establish which cabins every 777-300ER carries. Before paying extra for a premium cabin, confirm the aircraft and cabin layout for your specific flight rather than assuming the type’s reputation applies to your departure.

Two numbers from this article should be rechecked before you rely on them: the 22-aircraft count and the 2027 first-delivery expectation for the 777-9. Both are dated, and newer figures may exist.

What is not established here includes the 777-300ER’s share of United’s revenue, its cargo earnings by route, and its exact route assignments during 2025. Those gaps mean the airline’s stated reasons are the best available explanation, not a complete financial picture.
