Why Trump’s War With Iran Was Reported to Cost Nearly $1 Billion a Day

The reported near-$1 billion daily cost was preliminary. Later estimates put Defense Department costs at about $38 billion through August 1 and a Pentagon total of $43.6 billion through September 3, 2026.

The “nearly $1 billion a day” figure was an early, preliminary estimate—not a final public Pentagon accounting. Later figures give dated cumulative totals: the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated about $38 billion in Department of Defense costs through August 1, 2026, while Roll Call reported a Pentagon estimate of $43.6 billion through September 3. Those totals show how costs accumulated, but they do not establish a current daily rate.

Where the nearly $1 billion a day figure came from

The Atlantic reported the figure in March 2026 as a preliminary estimate attributed to an unnamed congressional official. It was not presented as a publicly released, itemized Pentagon ledger. The estimate offers an early indication of the scale of operations, but its anonymous attribution and preliminary status mean it should not be treated as a settled accounting. The Atlantic’s March 2026 report is the source of the widely cited figure.

What the later cost estimates say

Figure What it measures Cutoff or period Source and qualification
About $1 billion per day Preliminary war-cost estimate; detailed accounting scope was not publicly established in the report Early estimate reported in March 2026 The Atlantic, citing an unnamed congressional official; not a final public Pentagon accounting. Source
Approximately $38 billion Department of Defense costs; excludes costs borne by other federal agencies Through August 1, 2026 CBO estimate published in September 2026. Source
$43.6 billion Pentagon cost estimate reported to Congress Through September 3, 2026 Reported by Roll Call on September 18, 2026. Source
Up to $3 billion per month or more Conditional outlook for continued operations, dependent on the intensity of hostilities Forward-looking; not a fixed daily rate CBO outlook, as summarized by AP in September 2026. Source

The CBO and Pentagon figures are not interchangeable. They have different cutoff dates and may use different accounting methods. Without a comparable, itemized series, subtracting the totals or dividing the difference by the days between them would not produce a reliable daily cost.

What does the nearly $1 billion a day estimate include?

The early report does not provide enough public detail to specify the figure’s full accounting scope. It should not be assumed to represent every federal expense or the war’s total economic impact. CBO’s later estimate specifically concerns Department of Defense costs and excludes costs borne by other federal agencies.

Broader economic effects are a separate category. CBO described inflationary pressure associated with reduced oil and natural-gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and disrupted Red Sea shipping. The agency also noted that disruptions intensified after the analysis underlying its estimate was completed. These effects should not be added to direct military costs without explaining the distinct measures involved.

How much could the Iran war cost the US?

CBO said continued operations could cost up to $3 billion per month or more, depending on the intensity of hostilities. That is a conditional outlook, not a fixed monthly bill or a precise daily projection. The situation could change the assumptions behind any estimate: on October 1, 2026, AP reported that roughly 9,000 troops and a third aircraft carrier were heading toward the Middle East as President Trump considered further strikes.

For readers assessing the fiscal stakes, the most useful distinction is between a dated cumulative total and a projected rate. The $38 billion and $43.6 billion figures are cumulative estimates through specified dates; the $3 billion-per-month figure is conditional; and the early $1 billion-per-day figure is a preliminary report rather than a final, public accounting.
