Higher Treasury yields could make Bitcoin harder to justify for some investors, but they do not determine its price. Cointelegraph reported that Bitcoin gained 43% in the third quarter of 2026, its strongest third quarter since 2017, while CoinDesk reported the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.30% on September 30. The yield argument is about opportunity cost: Treasuries offer interest, while Bitcoin does not.
What happened to Bitcoin and Treasury yields?
Cointelegraph’s October 5, 2026 report put Bitcoin’s third-quarter gain at 43% and described it as the asset’s best third quarter since 2017. CoinDesk’s September 30 live coverage estimated a gain of about 44%, assuming the quarter ended near $84,000. The reports differ slightly in rounding and timing; neither figure should be treated as an independently verified calculation.
CoinDesk also reported that the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.30% on September 30. These are dated reports, not live market quotes. The available coverage does not establish a primary-source Treasury observation or reconcile the exact Bitcoin price endpoints and calculation methods.
Why could a 5% yield put pressure on Bitcoin?
A Treasury security pays interest, while Bitcoin pays no income. When government debt offers a higher nominal yield, investors may see less reason to accept Bitcoin’s volatility unless they expect its price to rise enough to compensate. That is the opportunity-cost argument behind the claim that yields above 5% make risk assets work harder to attract capital.

- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Cointelegraph quoted Delphi Digital’s weekly newsletter: “When a government bond pays over 5% risk-free, every risky asset has to work harder to deserve the money.” The phrase “risk-free” refers to the comparison commonly made with U.S. government debt; it does not mean that every risk associated with investing, inflation, or changing bond prices disappears.
A yield level is not a mechanical sell signal. The reports describe a possible source of pressure, not evidence that 5% causes Bitcoin to fall or that Treasury yields alone set its price.

Why might investors still buy Bitcoin when yields are high?
The same Cointelegraph report said some investors connected Bitcoin’s rally to the “debasement trade” thesis: the idea that government borrowing and currency expansion could erode the dollar’s purchasing power over time. If investors are buying Bitcoin for that reason, higher interest rates need not automatically end demand. Vanessa Grellet, managing partner at Arche Capital, was quoted saying, “the debasement trade doesn’t require low interest rates.”
These are competing explanations, not measured contributions to Bitcoin’s quarterly return. The reports do not quantify whether the yield hurdle or the debasement narrative mattered more.

How could Federal Reserve expectations change the picture?
Cointelegraph reported that weaker-than-expected September U.S. jobs data reduced expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike in October. That could ease the rate backdrop in the short term, but market expectations are not a Fed decision. The report also quoted John Williams, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York: “With the policy action we took at our September meeting, there is no need for urgency.”
For Bitcoin, the relevant issue is not simply whether the current yield is above 5%. Investors may also react to how inflation, labor-market data, and expected Fed policy change the likely path of yields. The cited coverage does not provide a complete dataset for those factors or establish how much each influenced prices.

What to watch when assessing the risk to Bitcoin?
- Treasury yields: A higher nominal yield can increase the return available from government debt relative to a non-yielding asset.
- Inflation and real yields: Nominal yield alone does not show the return after inflation. The reports do not provide a corresponding real-yield series.
- Fed expectations: New economic data can shift expectations for policy and, in turn, the rate backdrop.
- Bitcoin-specific demand: The debasement-trade thesis may support buying even when rates are elevated, but the cited reports do not measure its strength.
Read the 5% threshold as a market argument about relative returns, not a forecast rule. The quarter’s reported gain and the yield figures describe a striking overlap; they do not, by themselves, show that one caused the other.
