The U.S. dollar is the world’s leading international currency because it is useful across several connected parts of global finance: central-bank reserves, trade, banking, debt markets and foreign exchange. Its position grew from the scale of the U.S. economy, open and deep financial markets, and confidence in U.S. legal and institutional arrangements. Longstanding use then made the dollar convenient for still more transactions. It remains preeminent, although reserve managers have gradually diversified.
What does “world currency” mean?
There is no single official role called “the world currency.” The phrase usually refers to the dollar’s prominence in several international uses, not just to the currency central banks keep in reserve. The Federal Reserve describes dollar use in trade invoicing, global banking, international debt issuance and foreign-exchange transactions, as well as official reserves. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller’s 2024 speech explains these uses.
- Official reserves: Central banks and governments hold foreign currencies as assets they can use or draw on. The dollar remains the preeminent reserve currency, according to the IMF.
- Trade and payments: Businesses may invoice international sales in dollars even when neither party is based in the United States.
- Banking and debt: Banks and borrowers use dollars in cross-border finance and international borrowing.
- Foreign exchange: The dollar is widely used in currency trading, including as an intermediary when parties exchange two other currencies.
These measures describe different things. A dollar’s share of official reserves is not the same as its role in trade or the amount of U.S. government debt held by foreign investors.
Why did the dollar become the leading international currency?
The dollar’s rise was gradual, not the result of one policy or agreement. The IMF describes it as a multifaceted process involving U.S. economic growth, trade credit and the development of deep, liquid financial markets. The Federal Reserve says the dollar rose to prominence after the financial crisis associated with World War I and consolidated its role after the 1944 Bretton Woods Agreement. The IMF’s account of the dollar’s international role traces those historical supports.

Economic scale creates broad demand
A large economy generates substantial trade, investment and financial activity. When companies, investors and governments have frequent reasons to transact with U.S. firms or hold U.S. assets, using dollars becomes practical beyond U.S. borders too. The Federal Reserve identifies the size and strength of the U.S. economy as a long-running support for international dollar use. The Federal Reserve’s overview of the dollar’s international role sets out these factors.
Open markets and trusted institutions make dollar assets usable
International holders need to be able to buy, sell and transfer assets, and to have confidence in the rules governing them. The Federal Reserve points to U.S. stability and openness to trade and capital flows, property rights and the rule of law as supports for the dollar’s continued international use. These features contribute to confidence; they do not guarantee that every investor will choose dollar assets.

Deep financial markets support transactions at scale
Large, liquid markets make it easier for institutions to transact in substantial amounts and find buyers or sellers. The IMF cites the development of deep and liquid U.S. financial markets as one contributor to the dollar’s historical ascent. That market depth reinforces the dollar’s usefulness for reserves, lending, borrowing and trading.
Repeated use reinforces convenience
Once businesses, banks and investors already use a currency, others can often transact more easily in it too. A currency used for invoicing, financing and exchange can become a convenient bridge between parties and markets. That feedback helps explain why the dollar’s international role spans multiple functions rather than depending on reserve holdings alone.

How much of the role comes from Treasury securities?
U.S. Treasury securities are an important part of the picture, but foreign ownership of Treasuries is not itself a measure of the dollar’s share of global reserves. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 edition reports that foreign investors held $9 trillion, or 32 percent, of marketable Treasury securities outstanding in 2025 Q1. That figure concerns a specific asset market and date, not all dollar use. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 assessment gives the figure and reviews wider indicators of international use.
Is the dollar losing its reserve-currency status?
Its share of allocated official reserves has gradually declined, and the IMF reports continued diversification into nontraditional currencies. But the IMF still describes the dollar as the preeminent reserve currency. A declining share indicates diversification; by itself, it does not establish that another currency has replaced the dollar.

Reserve-share movements also need context: exchange-rate changes and bond yields can affect how reserve holdings are valued. Therefore, a change in the measured share does not necessarily mean central banks deliberately shifted the same amount of assets away from dollars for political reasons. The IMF discusses both diversification and the factors that affect measured reserve shares in its analysis of the dollar’s reserve role.
Broader measures tell a related but different story. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 edition says its combined indicators showed international dollar use little changed over the preceding five years and still far above the U.S. share of global GDP and trade. This does not mean every individual use stayed constant; it means the overall indicators did not show a comparable broad retreat.

Economic fragmentation and geopolitical pressures could encourage some countries to use or hold other currencies. The cited IMF analysis documents diversification and pressures, but it does not establish a replacement currency or a timetable for one.

Two often-cited figures refer to different measures, so they should not be compared as if they were the same statistic:
| Figure | What it measures | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Almost 60 percent of global reserves | The dollar’s share of global reserves in 2022 | Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller’s 2024 speech, reporting the 2022 figure |
| $9 trillion, or 32 percent | Foreign investors’ holdings of marketable Treasury securities outstanding | Federal Reserve, 2025 edition; data for 2025 Q1 |
The first is about reserve holdings; the second is about foreign investment in one category of U.S. securities. Neither figure alone captures every international use of the dollar.
