The S&P 500’s six-month low came on March 10, 2025, when stocks gave back the prior Friday afternoon’s recovery. Forbes reported that tariff uncertainty and worries about a possible recession weighed on investor sentiment, though the account did not establish one definitive cause for the selloff.
What happened on March 10, 2025?
Forbes reported that all three major U.S. stock indexes fell on Monday, reversing Friday afternoon’s rebound. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.1%, or 890 points; the S&P 500 fell 2.7%; and the Nasdaq Composite declined 4%. Forbes said the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at their lowest levels since mid-September, and the Dow at its lowest since September. The Nasdaq’s daily drop was its worst since September 2022, according to Forbes. Forbes, March 10, 2025.
Forbes also described the Nasdaq as being in correction territory, down 13% from its February 19 closing price. Over the same comparison period, the S&P 500 was down 9% and the Dow 6%. Those are historical figures reported for that date, not current market levels.
Why did stocks sell off?
Tariff uncertainty
Forbes pointed to uncertainty around the implementation of tariffs: when they would take effect and which goods would be covered. Uncertainty over policy can make it harder for investors to assess potential effects on companies, trade and the broader economy. In its account, this uncertainty contributed to weaker sentiment; it was not presented as a single, quantified cause of the day’s losses.

Recession concerns
Recession fears also figured in the coverage. Forbes reported that President Donald Trump, in a Fox News interview, declined to rule out a recession and described a period of economic “transition.” The article quoted him as saying, “you can’t really watch the stock market.” Sevens Report founder Tom Essaye said Trump’s comments were “weighing on sentiment” and “did nothing to ease investor concerns about ongoing policy chaos.” These are reported remarks and market commentary, not proof that any one statement caused the decline.
Forbes further reported that Goldman Sachs economists raised their odds of a significant downturn over the following 12 months to 20%, from 15%, citing trade policies. That forecast is attributed to Goldman Sachs through Forbes; it should not be read as an independently confirmed estimate here.

How sharp were the losses across markets?
| Index or stock | March 10, 2025, daily move | Comparison from February 19 |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Down 2.1%, or 890 points | Down 6% |
| S&P 500 | Down 2.7% | Down 9% |
| Nasdaq Composite | Down 4% | Down 13% |
| Nvidia | Down 5% | Down 23% |
| Tesla | Down 14% | Down 37% |
All figures in the table are historical numbers reported by Forbes on March 10, 2025. The February 19 figures compare with that date’s closing prices. The sharp declines in Nvidia and Tesla illustrate losses in two prominent stocks, but do not by themselves explain the broader index moves.

The day’s action showed a broad reversal of the previous Friday’s late recovery amid concerns about trade policy and the economic outlook. It does not establish that a recession had begun, that tariffs alone caused the selloff, or that the market’s direction after March 10 could be inferred from that day’s move. The reported figures describe a specific historical close, and the causal explanations in the article were market interpretations rather than a demonstrated breakdown of each index’s decline.
