CoinGecko recorded the token above a $300 million market capitalization on September 28, 2024; The Block later reported a November 2024 peak of $614 million. Those are historical figures, not current market data, and the timing does not prove that the hippo’s viral fame alone caused the token’s rise.
What is the Moo Deng memecoin?
MOODENG is a Solana memecoin inspired by Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. CoinGecko says the token launched through Pump.fun on September 11, 2024. The name and imagery refer to the animal; the available sources do not establish that Moo Deng or the zoo endorsed the token or that it represents an official conservation project. CoinGecko’s explainer also notes that tokens using the MOODENG name appeared on Ethereum and other networks, so a name match alone does not identify a particular asset.
Why did the Moo Deng coin surge?
The chronology links the token’s rapid rise to a moment when Moo Deng was attracting intense online attention, but it does not establish a single cause for the price movement. The zoo introduced Moo Deng on Facebook, and the young hippo’s antics and appearance spread widely online. The attention generated fan art, memes, songs and merchandise, while coverage of the animal’s popularity brought more visitors to the zoo. The Associated Press reports that her name means “bouncy pork,” referring to a type of meatball.
CoinGecko’s third-quarter 2024 report records the Solana token exceeding $300 million in market capitalization on September 28, 17 days after launch. In July 2025, The Block reported that MOODENG had risen 1,400% within weeks of its September 2024 launch and placed its historical market-cap peak at $614 million in November 2024. These retrospective figures describe different points in the token’s past; they are not evidence of its value today.

Animal-driven attention is context, not proof of causation. The sources document the viral story and the token’s timeline, but do not show that online popularity by itself produced the price rise. Memecoin prices can move sharply, and market capitalization can change quickly as price and circulating supply change.
The animal behind the name is not the token
Moo Deng became famous as a real animal, not as a crypto project. In September 2024, TIME reported that visitor numbers at Khao Kheow Open Zoo more than doubled after her viral rise, alongside concerns about visitors trying to get her attention. Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi warned: “These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous. We must protect these animals and ensure that they have a safe and comfortable environment.” The warning was about visitor conduct and animal safety, not the memecoin. TIME’s report provides that context.

What to check before relying on a current MOODENG figure
Because multiple tokens have used the MOODENG name, a current market quote is meaningful only when it identifies the exact asset and the time of the data. Confirm the network and token contract address, then check the timestamp, trading venue, liquidity and market capitalization. Do not assume that matching branding establishes an official relationship with the zoo or animal. Historical reports cannot substitute for a live, dated market source.
