The “90.9” headline refers to the Indian rupee’s December 16, 2025 closing low of 90.93 per US dollar. PTI reporting also put the intraday low that day at 91.14. Those figures describe different points in the trading session, and neither is the rupee’s current record: Reuters reported a later intraday low of 94.84 per dollar on March 27, 2026.
What does 90.9 rupees per dollar mean?
It is a USD/INR exchange-rate quote: the number of Indian rupees needed to buy one US dollar. At 90.9, one dollar costs about 90.9 rupees. When the quote rises, the dollar buys more rupees and the rupee has weakened against the dollar; it is not an appreciation of the rupee.
The 90.9 figure is a rounded description of a reported closing rate, not the session’s intraday low. PTI, in a report carried by India Monitor on January 17, 2026, gave a December 16, 2025 close of 90.93 per dollar and an intraday low of 91.14. Earlier that month, Reuters reported an intraday low of 90.29 on December 3. These are reported market observations, not necessarily an official RBI reference or fixing rate. Why was the rupee under pressure?
There was no single established cause. Reuters reports around the early-December breach of 90 described several forces working together to increase demand for dollars or reduce their supply in the Indian market:

- Trade and investment dollar outflows: Payments for imports and other transactions create demand for dollars. Reuters also cited weaker foreign investment flows and slower dollar inflows.
- Foreign investors selling Indian stocks: Reuters reported nearly $17 billion in net foreign selling of Indian stocks during 2025 through its December 3 reporting cutoff. Those flows can add to dollar demand when proceeds are converted out of rupees.
- Tariffs and trade pressures: Reuters identified US tariffs and a record merchandise trade deficit among the factors weighing on the currency. A larger gap between merchandise imports and exports can increase net demand for foreign currency, though it does not by itself determine the exchange rate.
- Corporate hedging and importer demand: Companies seeking protection against further rupee weakness, along with importers buying dollars to meet payments, added to demand.
- Exporters delaying dollar sales: Reuters reported that some exporters held back dollar sales. That can reduce the supply of dollars available in the market at a given time.
- Market positioning: Reuters also described speculative positioning as a pressure. Such activity can amplify moves, but reporting on it does not establish that speculation alone caused the decline.
Reuters said the rupee had fallen 5% against the dollar year to date in its December 3, 2025 report. That is a figure for the period covered by that report, not a current or annual rate. Reuters via Investing.com Rank #2
