The Indian rupee fell to a then-record low of 90.42 per US dollar on Dec. 4, 2025, surpassing its previous low of 90.29 the day before. That figure is a historical market print, not a current exchange rate. The decline reflected several reported pressures—including foreign investment outflows, trade uncertainty, weaker dollar inflows and rising demand for dollars—not one established cause.
What happened on Dec. 4, 2025?
The rupee traded at 90.42 per dollar on Dec. 4, 2025, according to The Economic Times, citing Reuters. It had reached 90.29 on Dec. 3. Reuters reported that the rupee had depreciated by more than 5% year to date at that point; that describes performance through the 2025 reporting date, not the currency’s current performance.
The 90.42 level did not remain the record. Reuters reported a new low of 90.74 on Dec. 15, 2025, after the rupee had reached 90.55 on Dec. 12 (Reuters via MarketScreener). Reuters later reported that the rupee reached an all-time low of 96.96 in May 2026 (Reuters via MarketScreener).
Why was the rupee falling against the dollar?
Reports from December 2025 described several pressures operating together. They do not establish a single proven cause for the exchange-rate move.

Foreign investors were pulling money from Indian stocks
Reuters reported that foreign investors had sold nearly $17 billion in Indian stocks net year to date as of Dec. 3, 2025. When investors sell Indian assets and move funds abroad, they may sell rupees and buy dollars, adding pressure to the rupee. The $17 billion figure is a contemporaneous year-to-date estimate reported on Dec. 3, not a current total.
Tariffs and trade uncertainty weighed on sentiment
Reuters cited U.S. tariffs as a factor weighing on Indian exports and on the appeal of local equities to foreign investors. The Indian Express also reported that uncertainty around an India–U.S. trade deal was a concern for market participants. These pressures could affect both expected dollar earnings from trade and investor demand for Indian assets.

Dollar inflows were weaker while demand for dollars rose
Reuters cited reduced dollar flows from foreign direct investment and offshore borrowing. At the same time, importer demand for dollars and higher global precious-metal prices were reported as additional pressures. The Indian Express quoted HDFC Securities research analyst Dilip Parmar: “Surging global prices for precious metals enforced metal importers into rush for dollars, creating immense pressure. The rupee’s depreciation was exacerbated amid likely limited intervention from the central bank to stabilise the market.” This is an analyst’s assessment, not an official central-bank statement.
Hedging and speculation added to the pressure
Reuters also reported additional dollar demand for hedging and said that crossing the psychologically important 90-per-dollar level encouraged speculative positions against the rupee. Such trading can amplify pressure, but the cited reports do not quantify how much it contributed.

What does a weaker rupee mean?
An exchange rate of 90.42 rupees per dollar means a buyer needed 90.42 rupees to obtain one U.S. dollar at that reported market level. When the rupee weakens, dollar-priced imports and dollar payments can cost more in rupees, all else equal. The cited reporting documents the market pressures behind the move; it does not quantify the effect on household budgets, prices or particular borrowers.
Reuters quoted HSBC economists describing the exchange rate as an economic adjustment mechanism: “Left on its own, the Indian rupee is a shock absorber for the economy, and an automatic stabiliser for external finances.” They added: “A gradually weakening INR is the best shock absorber for high tariffs.” This is the economists’ analytical view as reported by Reuters, not an official position of the Reserve Bank of India.

Did the RBI intervene to support the rupee?
The Indian Express reported that market participants saw RBI intervention around 90.42–90.45 on Dec. 11, 2025. Reuters also reported intervention-related assessments in later coverage. These accounts attribute the claims to market participants or traders; they are not official RBI confirmation of a specific intervention on Dec. 4 or Dec. 11.
Is 90.42 the current exchange rate?
No. It was the reported low on Dec. 4, 2025, and later records went lower. The latest RBI rate listing cited here is 95.7170 rupees per dollar for 1 p.m. on July 29, 2026; the RBI listing identifies FBIL as its source (RBI Current Rates). That dated listing is not an Oct. 8, 2026 spot quote. Exchange rates vary over time, so a rate used for a payment or conversion should be checked with the relevant bank or provider for its date and terms.
