The FAA’s April 2026 “It’s not a Game. It’s a Career.” campaign used gaming to attract applicants by arguing that skills such as spatial awareness, focus, and quick decision-making may transfer to air traffic control. Gaming is not a qualification, however: applicants still have to meet FAA eligibility rules, pass screening, and complete years of training before certification.
Why did the FAA target gamers?
On April 10, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA announced the campaign alongside an entry-level controller hiring window. The April announcement said applications would open at midnight on April 17 and close once the FAA received 8,000 applications; that was a limited window, not an indication that applications are currently open. The agency’s pitch was that some gaming-related abilities—multitasking, spatial awareness, strategy, problem-solving, and staying focused amid complexity—could be useful in controller work. The FAA also cited exit interviews in which some controllers said gaming helped them think quickly or manage complex situations. That is anecdotal, agency-reported feedback, not a controlled study proving gamers perform better or are more likely to succeed.
Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the campaign’s gaming focus was intended to reach young adults with skills that could help them become successful controllers. The FAA announcement also cited its estimate that 65 percent of Americans—more than 200 million people—regularly play video games; the announcement did not identify the underlying survey for that figure. What happened after the campaign launched?
USDOT reported that the 24-hour hiring window received 12,350 applications, including 10,779 it classified as qualified. The department described the total as more than double its previous first-day record. USDOT’s application-window results
In a later release, the FAA described the campaign as recruiting “more than 12,000 qualified Americans” in 24 hours. That is the FAA’s wording; it is not the same breakdown as USDOT’s specific total of 12,350 applications and 10,779 qualified applicants. The FAA also reported 2,235 controller-trainee hires in fiscal year 2026, its highest annual total, and said it planned to hire at least 8,900 trainees through 2028. FAA’s FY2026 hiring announcement

Does gaming count as a qualification?
No. Gaming is not listed as a formal qualification or a substitute for any hiring requirement. The FAA says a traditional four-year college degree is not required, but applicants must meet the eligibility and screening criteria in the specific vacancy announcement. - Be a U.S. citizen and under age 31.
- Meet medical and security clearance requirements.
- Pass FAA pre-employment testing, including the Air Traffic Controller Specialists Skills Assessment Battery (ATSA).
- Communicate clearly in English.
- Have one year of progressively responsible work experience, a bachelor’s degree, or an eligible combination of postsecondary education and work experience totaling one year.
The FAA qualifications page says fewer than 10 percent of applicants meet the requirements and are accepted into training. Eligibility details and application dates can vary by vacancy, so use the active announcement on USAJOBS rather than assuming an earlier campaign window remains available. FAA qualifications page

What does the ATSA test, and how should applicants prepare?
The ATSA is a required part of pre-employment screening. GAO describes it as a series of tests used to place applicants into qualification bands, assessing abilities that include mathematical reasoning, decision-making, spatial comprehension, memory, and planning. In GAO’s FY2017–FY2022 applicant records, many candidates left the process at this stage because they did not take the test or did not meet minimum score requirements; those historical figures are not current pass rates. Applicants can prepare by reviewing the vacancy instructions and becoming familiar with the skills the test assesses. The FAA requires the ATSA, but the FAA and GAO sources do not require or endorse a particular outside study guide. Do not treat gaming experience—or any commercial practice material—as a guarantee of a passing score.

How long does training take?
For entry-level hires, the FAA describes several months of paid training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. After graduating, trainees go to assigned facilities for another two to three years of classroom and on-the-job training before they can become certified professional controllers. GAO describes the overall Track 1 path, from application through full certification, as taking two to six years. The range reflects individual variation in completing hiring, Academy training, and facility certification; it is not a promise that every trainee will finish within a particular period. GAO’s historical analysis also found that about 4 percent of Track 1 applicants it could follow from FY2017 through FY2022 completed all hiring steps and began Academy training. GAO cautions that its records were incomplete, so the figure is not a precise count of every applicant and should not be applied to current cohorts. GAO report

Are there other routes into air traffic control?
The gamer-focused campaign concerned entry-level recruitment; it does not change the separate route for experienced controllers. The FAA’s FY2026–FY2028 workforce plan says experienced applicants must have at least 52 contiguous weeks of certified air traffic control experience within the preceding five years. The plan also describes expanding partnerships with Air Traffic-Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) and Enhanced AT-CTI schools. Those programs do not remove the FAA’s testing, selection, medical, or security requirements, and the plan identifies training capacity as a constraint on workforce growth. FAA workforce plan
