What happened to UnitedHealth stock?
UnitedHealth shares fell from Wednesday’s close of $585 to $454 on April 17, a decline of $131 per share, or 22.4%, according to Forbes’ report that day. Forbes characterized it as the company’s steepest daily loss since Aug. 6, 1998.
Why did UnitedHealth shares fall?
The sell-off followed first-quarter results that missed analyst expectations and a reduction in the company’s full-year adjusted earnings-per-share outlook. UnitedHealth reported $109.6 billion in first-quarter revenue and adjusted EPS of $7.20; Forbes said both figures were more than 1% below FactSet consensus estimates.
The company projected 2025 adjusted EPS of $26 to $26.50, below the $29.72 forecast cited before the results were released. CEO Andrew Witty said in a statement accompanying the earnings release that the company “did not perform up to our expectations,” as reported by Forbes.

Why did the Dow fall with UnitedHealth?
The Dow fell 527 points, or 1.3%, according to Forbes. UnitedHealth’s large share-price decline mattered unusually much because the Dow is weighted by share price rather than by companies’ total market value. At Wednesday’s close, UnitedHealth was the Dow’s largest component; during Thursday’s session, it lost that position to Goldman Sachs.
That construction helps explain why one company’s plunge could weigh heavily on the Dow. A 527-point move alone, however, does not describe the broader market’s performance, and the other major indexes cited in the report moved differently:

The S&P 500 edged higher while the Nasdaq slipped slightly, underscoring that the Dow’s decline was not a uniform measure of every major U.S. stock index that day.
