Denise Prudhomme, 60, scanned into Wells Fargo’s Tempe, Arizona, office at about 7 a.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024. She was found in a third-floor cubicle on Tuesday, August 20, after on-site security alerted police. The known timeline spans a weekend, but the available reporting does not explain why she was not found sooner. That gap—not evidence of a particular workplace failure—is part of what makes the story so unsettling.
What happened at the Tempe Wells Fargo office
CBS News reported, citing Tempe police, that Prudhomme scanned into the office at about 7 a.m. Friday, August 16, and did not scan out. On Tuesday, August 20, on-site security alerted police after she was found in a third-floor cubicle.
Police said the preliminary investigation showed no obvious signs of foul play. At the time of the CBS News report, the medical examiner’s determination was still pending. Those were preliminary findings, not a complete account of what happened during the intervening days.
What the medical examiner later determined
In an October 25, 2024, report, AZFamily attributed the finding to the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner: Prudhomme died of “sudden cardiac death in the setting of myocardial fibrosis.” That later determination clarifies the reported cause of death. It does not establish that her work or workplace conditions caused her death.

Why the timeline feels so jarring
The dates create a stark contrast: Prudhomme entered the office on Friday morning and was found on Tuesday, with a weekend between those events. Readers are left with a basic human question—how can someone be present at work and remain undiscovered for that interval?
The reporting establishes the scan-in, the discovery date, and that on-site security alerted police. It does not give a full account of the intervening days: it does not establish how often the area was occupied, what security checked, or exactly why she was not found earlier. The absence of those details may intensify the unease, but it is not evidence by itself of what any individual or employer knew or did.
What the story says—and does not say—about workplace connection
Commentary has treated the incident as a prompt to think about loneliness, connection, and whether people feel noticed at work. Forbes contributor Lindsay Kohler framed it as a reminder of life’s brevity and asked what it means when someone can be at work without being noticed for days. HR Dive likewise used the story to reflect on employee connection, engagement, and support. These are interpretations of the incident, not findings by police or the medical examiner and not proof of a specific Wells Fargo policy failure.
HR Dive also reported that more than 4 in 10 workers surveyed said they felt “very” or “somewhat” lonely at work, attributing the figure to a Perceptyx November report. HR Dive’s article does not identify the year, and the underlying Perceptyx report is not available in the cited reporting for direct verification. The figure should therefore be understood as HR Dive’s account of one survey, not as a universal measure or evidence about Prudhomme’s experience or that office.
