The Boeing 767 is not facing one fleet-wide retirement date. Boeing expects to complete the commercial 767 program by 2027, but that is a production target—not a deadline for aircraft already flying. Passenger 767s are expected to leave some fleets, while converted and purpose-built freighters still have a role in cargo operations.
When will Boeing stop building commercial 767s?
Boeing’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, says the company expects to complete the commercial 767 program by 2027. It describes an approximate production rate of three aircraft per month on the 767 assembly line. The line also supports the KC-46A tanker derivative, so its continued operation should not be mistaken for evidence that Boeing will keep building commercial passenger jets or freighters indefinitely. That production plan concerns new commercial aircraft. It does not itself retire the 767s already in service, which can continue flying as long as operators find them suitable and meet applicable requirements.
Why can the 767 remain useful for cargo?
It fills a medium-widebody freight role
Boeing positions the 767-300F and the 767-300 Boeing Converted Freighter for medium-widebody cargo work. Boeing lists a structural payload of 57 tonnes and a range of 3,300 nautical miles for the 767-300F. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of a particular payload on every route; actual operations depend on conditions and configuration. Boeing Freighter Family

Boeing offers both new-build and converted 767 cargo aircraft. Conversion can provide a route from passenger service into freight rather than immediate retirement, but a specific aircraft’s future depends on its condition, conversion economics, operator demand, and regulatory requirements. Boeing describes the converted aircraft as a market-preferred option for general and express cargo; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent market ranking. Boeing 767
Operators still report significant 767 freighter fleets
FedEx reported 152 Boeing 767F aircraft in its fleet as of May 31, 2026. That company-reported figure demonstrates substantial use at one major cargo operator; it is not a count of all active 767s worldwide. FedEx 2026 Form 10-K

Are passenger 767s also staying in service?
Not uniformly. The FAA’s FY2026–2046 Aerospace Forecast expects U.S. passenger widebody fleets to add newer aircraft while retiring 767-300/400 models. In the same forecast, converted 767-300 aircraft are among the additions to the cargo fleet. The forecast therefore describes a possible shift in role as well as passenger-fleet replacement; it is a U.S.-specific projection, not a schedule for every airline or individual aircraft. FAA Aerospace Forecasts
The FAA says the U.S. widebody passenger fleet grows by an average of 20 aircraft a year over the forecast period, alongside retirements that include 767-300/400s. That projection does not mean every passenger 767 will leave service at the same time, nor does the cited evidence establish a global retirement timetable. FAA Aerospace Forecasts

What “not retired anytime soon” does—and does not—mean
- New commercial production: Boeing’s stated target is to complete the commercial 767 program by 2027.
- Passenger operations: the FAA projects U.S. passenger 767-300/400 retirements as newer widebodies enter service.
- Cargo operations: the FAA projects converted 767-300s joining the U.S. cargo fleet, and FedEx reported 152 767F aircraft as of May 31, 2026.
- Individual aircraft: the sources do not establish a single retirement date or show that every 767 is economically viable to keep flying.
In short, the 767’s commercial production can wind down while aircraft already built remain in service—particularly as freighters. That distinction explains why the type may continue operating even as passenger fleets transition to newer aircraft.
