Jonathan and Ana Towns, who finished third on Season 37 of The Amazing Race, are seeking $8 million in a lawsuit accusing companies associated with the show of editing footage to defame Jonathan. The amount is a damages demand, not money a court has awarded. The claims described in public reports are allegations; those reports do not establish that a court has found them true.
Why are Jonathan and Ana Towns suing?
The Townses filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court in March 2026 against companies associated with The Amazing Race. Their complaint alleges that the show’s production edited Jonathan’s behavior to create a false and damaging portrayal of him as abusive. The complaint reportedly says the production took footage out of context, left out material the plaintiffs regard as favorable or humanizing, included material they consider inflammatory and irrelevant, and applied editorial standards unevenly. TheWrap also reports that the complaint alleges the competition was rigged and calls the alleged conduct a “smear strategy so audacious and immoral.” That phrase is the plaintiffs’ characterization, not a court finding.
TheWrap quotes the complaint as saying: “The gravaman of this action is not a dispute over legitimate editorial judgement or discretion.” The quoted spelling is retained as reported. The lawsuit’s characterization does not establish that the editing was defamatory.

What are the plaintiffs asking the court to do?
The Townses reportedly seek $8 million in damages, a jury trial, an apology, and an injunction requiring the season to be re-edited with disclaimers about Jonathan’s autism diagnosis. The $8 million is the amount they are asking for, not a judgment, settlement, or established measure of harm.
Reports say Jonathan was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder after filming. LegalClarity reports that the complaint alleges production did not know of the diagnosis during filming and did not alter episodes that had yet to air after learning of it. The plaintiffs’ request for disclaimers does not establish that the diagnosis caused the portrayal or that a court has accepted their account. What has Jonathan Towns said about his behavior on the show?
CinemaBlend reported that Jonathan later acknowledged his conduct toward Ana as inexcusable. It quoted him saying: “I am, at the end of the day, 100% responsible for how I direct my anger and who I direct it on. In this case, I directed my anger onto my wife. That should never, ever have happened. That’s on me, 100%. It’s hard looking back at this knowing what I know now. It’s unfortunate that we went on the show not knowing what we know.”

What is known about the lawsuit’s status?
LegalClarity’s June 29, 2026 article described the case as being in its earliest stages as of mid-2026 and said no hearings, rulings, settlement discussions, or formal defendant responses had been reported.
