How much did Tesla sales decline?
Tesla reported 336,681 global vehicle deliveries in Q1 2025, compared with 386,810 in Q1 2024—a year-over-year decline of about 13%. These are company-reported worldwide delivery figures, not a measure of sales in one specific country. Tesla’s Q1 2025 delivery announcement also cautioned that deliveries are only one measure of financial performance and should not be treated on their own as an indicator of quarterly financial results.
What happened in Europe?
European registrations show a steep regional drop over a specific two-month period: Tesla registrations were down 49% in January and February 2025, while the overall European battery-electric vehicle market grew 28.4%, according to ACEA figures reported by the Associated Press. The comparison is for January–February, not the full year, and does not establish that Tesla sales declined in every market. The Associated Press report describes registrations, a regional measure distinct from Tesla’s global quarterly delivery count.
What may explain the decline?
The available evidence points to several factors occurring at the same time, but does not assign a reliable share of the decline to any one of them.

Model Y production changeover
Tesla disclosed that changing over Model Y production lines across all four factories led to several weeks of lost production in Q1. That is a company-reported supply disruption. It does not establish how many potential deliveries were lost, whether customers postponed purchases, or how many deliveries shifted to a later quarter. The detail appears in Tesla’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 31, 2025.
Competition and the product lineup
Contemporaneous coverage cited growing competition, including from Chinese electric-vehicle makers such as BYD, as part of the market context. It also pointed to concerns about an aging lineup and the possibility that some buyers were waiting for the refreshed Model Y. These are reported explanations and plausible demand or timing factors, not measured counts of buyers switching to rivals or delaying a purchase. The Associated Press’s April 2 report discusses these factors alongside the sales decline.

Controversy surrounding Elon Musk
Coverage also connected consumer backlash and protests associated with Musk’s political activity to Tesla’s sales slump. That provides context for the period, but does not prove that controversy alone caused the global decline or quantify its effect relative to production constraints and competition.

- Company-disclosed: The Model Y production changeover caused several weeks of lost production during the quarter.
- Reported explanations, not quantified causes: Competition, lineup age, refresh timing and backlash related to Musk were cited in contemporaneous coverage.
- Not established: The relative contribution of each factor, the number of customers diverted to competitors, or whether the production disruption merely shifted deliveries into a later period.
For investors, the delivery decline is an operating signal, not a complete financial result. Tesla explicitly says deliveries should not be relied on alone as an indicator of quarterly financial performance; pricing, costs, currency movements and other factors also affect financial results.
