Why SyncWords CEO Ash Shah Thinks AI Could Revive Live Video Streaming

Ash Shah sees AI localization as a way to make live streams accessible across languages at scale. The opportunity is real to evaluate, but performance and commercial claims need testing.

SyncWords CEO Ash Shah’s “renaissance” thesis is that AI can make live video captions, subtitles and dubbed audio practical across more streams and languages. That could widen access and help broadcasters reach new audiences—but it is a business proposition, not proof that a renaissance is already underway. The case depends on reliable timing and language quality, workable integration and evidence that localization improves access or commercial results.

What Shah means by a live-streaming renaissance

Shah argues that cloud distribution and AI localization can help live video reach viewers who cannot hear the source audio or do not understand its language. The idea is broader than producing more streams: operators could distribute live programming to more regions, make it more accessible, and potentially earn more from each feed through subscriptions, advertising or licensing.

SyncWords’ interview connects the opportunity to sports, news, gaming, corporate events and government programming. Shah also cites an estimate of 200 billion hours of live streaming annually. That figure is his or SyncWords’ claim in the interview, not an independently established market measurement. Likewise, SyncWords estimates that translation can grow an audience by 5X; that is not a general benchmark for every stream.

The strongest version of the argument is operational: AI may turn localization from a costly, one-off production task into a service that can run across many concurrent streams and languages. Whether that translates into new revenue depends on the audience, rights, distribution and economics of each program.

Why live localization is harder than captioning a finished video

A video-on-demand file can be transcribed, translated, reviewed and corrected before publication. A live feed has no finished source at the start. Speech recognition, translation, caption timing or voice synthesis, audio mixing, packaging and delivery must keep running as the event unfolds.

That leaves little time to correct errors before viewers see them. Live speech may include interruptions, overlapping speakers, crowd noise, fast-changing terminology and names the system has never encountered. Captions or dubbed audio that lag too far behind the action can also be confusing, even when the underlying translation is sound.

Shah describes earlier live workflows as reliant on hardware encoders and human captioners, making them expensive and difficult to scale. Cloud services and AI can reduce some of that burden, but the models are only part of the job: operators still need to manage timing, packaging, failover, monitoring and compatibility with the existing broadcast stack.

What SyncWords offers

SyncWords is not a single “AI video” feature. Its offering spans live captioning, translated subtitles, synthetic dubbed audio and the integrations used to get those outputs to viewers. Product descriptions and language counts vary by feature and publication; buyers should confirm support for the specific language direction, output and workflow they need.

Capability What it does What SyncWords says
Live captioning Turns speech into timed text for accessibility and other uses. The company describes support for broadcast-oriented formats and delivery including 608, Teletext, VTT, DVB-TTML, SRT, HLS and CMAF. Confirm compatibility in the intended workflow.
Live subtitling Translates spoken content into written languages for a stream or event experience. The current main site advertises 40-plus subtitle languages; the AWS Marketplace description advertises 100-plus translation languages. These figures may describe different features, language directions or product descriptions, not one interchangeable list.
AI voice dubbing Produces translated speech in a synthetic voice. The current site markets Vocalics with 30-plus languages and under-one-second latency. The earlier interview cited 100-plus translation languages and more than 900 voice options. Those dated claims should not be combined into a single current specification.

The company describes integrations with AWS Elemental MediaLive, MediaPackage and MediaConnect, as well as HLS, SRT and RTMP/RTMPS workflows and destinations such as YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook. It also describes browser and QR-code delivery for in-person events. Protocol support alone does not establish that a particular player, DRM setup, DVR, ad-insertion system or redundancy plan will work without changes.

How the live workflow fits together

Shah says SyncWords built its live-processing infrastructure rather than relying on a ready-made open-source solution. He identifies cloud and Kubernetes architecture, low-latency processing and integration with third-party speech recognition and translation models as important parts of the system. In practical terms, the workflow looks like this:

  1. Ingest: Receive the live feed or its audio through a supported connection.
  2. Recognize speech: Convert speech into text, accounting for available audio channels and language settings.
  3. Apply terminology: Use dictionaries or other controls where available to improve handling of names and specialist terms.
  4. Translate or synthesize: Create subtitles in selected languages, or generate translated speech for dubbed audio.
  5. Synchronize and package: Align the output with the live program and format it for its intended stream or player.
  6. Deliver and monitor: Send captions, subtitles or alternate audio to viewers, while tracking quality, latency and failures.

The company’s proposed value is therefore not just access to an AI model. It also depends on orchestration, stream timing, format support, monitoring and the delivery route. SyncWords says customers can connect through APIs and cloud workflows; whether that removes work or adds operational dependencies needs to be established in a proof of concept.

Why the company moved from VOD toward live

In its interview, SyncWords says it began with captions and subtitles for on-demand video, added real-time event captions through widgets, then pivoted in 2022 toward in-player live subtitles and dubbing. The company says it launched that platform in December 2023. It describes the move as a response to customer preference for language features inside the video experience rather than in a separate widget.

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

The history illustrates a broader product challenge: automating an existing service is not automatically a durable business. SyncWords’ account is that it moved from a more familiar file-based workflow toward the harder problem of integrating localization into live delivery. It also said at the time that revenue from its older product funded much of the development and that it had raised $2 million in seed funding. Those are historical company statements, not current financing figures. The interview page is dated January 31, 2025, while SyncWords’ editorial index lists it as July 22, 2024, so the publication date is inconsistent across the company’s pages.

Three distinct reasons to localize a live stream

Accessibility

Captions can make programming usable for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers and can support organizations’ accessibility obligations. That value does not depend on proving an increase in subscriptions or advertising. Automated captions do not, by themselves, establish compliance with every applicable law, broadcaster rule or accessibility standard; the required format, accuracy and correction process depend on the service and jurisdiction.

Reach across language markets

Translated subtitles or dubbed audio can make a live program understandable to people who do not speak its source language. This may be relevant to sports, news, events and recurring OTT channels, but language availability is not the same as equal quality in every language. Rights, local distribution and whether viewers want the program still matter.

Commercial return

SyncWords markets localization as a way to pursue more regional distribution, subscriptions, advertising inventory and international licensing. Those are possible revenue paths, not automatic outcomes of adding a translation track. An operator needs to compare incremental audience and revenue with localization, distribution, quality-assurance and infrastructure costs.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The performance and growth figures cited publicly here are primarily company claims, product marketing or case-study results. They offer reasons to investigate the proposition, but they do not independently establish accuracy across all live content or prove that localization caused a commercial result.

  • Accuracy: The interview reports 94% accuracy for “core high resource language pairs.” It does not establish in that claim a clear metric, test set, content conditions or whether the figure measures transcription, translation or both. It should not be treated as a universal accuracy guarantee.
  • Latency: The current site advertises sub-second translated subtitles and under-one-second dubbing, while the earlier interview describes a few seconds of latency. Different products or workflows may explain the difference, but the figures are not directly comparable without measurement details. Model inference time is also not the same as end-to-end delay after packaging, delivery and player buffering.
  • Customer examples: SyncWords reports more than 13,000 hours subtitled over three months in a sports case study, across five languages and 36 simultaneous live events. It also reports more than 50% subscription growth for an Australian OTT provider during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The subscription result is company-reported; a major sporting event may itself attract subscribers, so the figure does not show that localization alone caused the increase.
  • Company-reported volume: The current homepage says SyncWords translated or captioned more than 35,000 events, 34,000 hours of live media and 270,000 hours of recorded media. These are first-party marketing figures, not independently audited measurements.

For a buyer, the useful follow-up is to ask how a claimed result was measured: which languages and content were tested, what counted as an error, how much delay viewers experienced, and what outcomes changed relative to a comparable baseline.

Pricing and the economics of multiple outputs

SyncWords is available through AWS Marketplace under contract- and usage-based pricing; AWS infrastructure charges may be additional. The Marketplace listing gives annual contract examples, while the help documentation explains that usage is counted per output language or type. These published figures are a pricing signal, not a complete quote for a particular deployment.

Annual usage tier Listed annual price
50 hours $1,350
250 hours $6,000
500 hours $11,250
1,000 hours $19,500
2,500 hours $37,500
5,000 hours $60,000
9,000 hours $81,000

The listing says 24-month contracts can save up to 10% and 36-month contracts up to 20%. It also lists overage rates from $0.45 to $0.15 per usage unit depending on tier; the listed annual contract amounts and rates should be confirmed against current Marketplace terms. The help page says active-service runtime allowance is three times the usage amount, with excess billed at $0.10 per hour.

  • Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video

Output-based counting can make a multilingual event consume usage faster than its source duration suggests. SyncWords’ example says one hour of English captions plus French and Spanish subtitles and French dubbing counts as four usage hours. A buyer estimating cost should therefore count each caption, subtitle or audio output, as well as active-service runtime, AWS costs and any human review—not just the source-feed hours.

How to assess fit before committing

A serious evaluation should test the actual feed, languages, player and delivery path, rather than rely on protocol lists or headline latency claims. Useful questions include:

  • Workflow: Can the service accept the real input and produce the required caption, subtitle and alternate-audio formats within the existing player, CDN, DRM, DVR and ad-insertion setup?
  • Quality: How does it handle accents, proper names, technical terms, overlapping speakers, crowd noise, music and code-switching in the target languages? Can teams maintain dictionaries or glossaries?
  • Latency and resilience: What is the viewer-perceived delay after packaging and buffering? What happens when latency rises, a model fails or a stream must fail over?
  • Economics: What is billed per source hour and per output? What are the minimum contract, overage, idle-runtime and infrastructure costs? Do unused hours expire?
  • Governance: What are the data-retention and deletion terms, security controls and processing regions? For dubbed content, what consent and rights govern voice cloning, and how are synthetic voices disclosed?
  • Human escalation: Can staff review or correct high-stakes output, and is there a reliable fallback for content where a mistranslation could cause legal, safety or reputational harm?

Routine webinars or broad-access event captions may be reasonable candidates for automation, subject to testing. Emergency alerts, medical or legal programming, financial announcements and other high-consequence material warrant stronger editorial controls and human review. The appropriate boundary depends on the harm an error could cause, not just whether the AI output sounds fluent.

What would make the renaissance real

Shah’s thesis is plausible as a description of what AI could enable: more streams can be captioned or localized without building a separate production operation for every language. But a technical capability becomes a durable market only if it works inside real broadcast systems, meets the quality and delay needs of viewers, has transparent economics and produces measurable audience, access or business value.

SyncWords is most relevant to operators with recurring live volume, several language outputs, and the engineering capacity to validate an enterprise workflow. Its public claims and case studies justify a carefully scoped trial; they do not settle comparative accuracy, latency, compliance or return on investment. Those are the tests on which the “renaissance” ultimately depends.
