The League shares central income through a mix of equal payments and performance-linked allocations; Deloitte’s £95 million figure concerns league-wide revenue growth attributed to changes in club mix, not a Sunderland-specific loss imposed on each incumbent.
What the headline gets wrong
The claim that Sunderland’s promotion will cost every Premier League team millions turns a complicated change in league membership into a direct, universal charge. No published calculation cited here isolates how Sunderland’s arrival changes each incumbent club’s receipts. Nor does the available evidence establish that Sunderland caused the Premier League’s reported £95 million club-mix contribution to revenue growth in 2024/25.
Three separate questions matter: how much promotion may earn Sunderland, how the League distributes central revenue among its clubs, and whether a changing set of clubs affects the competition’s overall revenues. Evidence about one is not proof of the others.
How Premier League central revenue is shared
The Premier League’s finance explainer describes a system that combines equal shares with payments linked to broadcasting and results. The exact categories differ by revenue source:

- UK broadcast revenue: 50% is shared equally among clubs, 25% is allocated according to how often a club’s matches are shown in the UK (facility fees), and 25% is based on final league position (merit payments).
- Central commercial revenue: shared equally among clubs.
- International broadcast revenue: current levels are shared equally. Future increases are allocated according to league position under a formula with a capped ratio.
Equal shares mean that central distributions are not simply a fixed pot awarded only to the best-performing teams. Facility fees and merit payments do mean clubs can receive different amounts. These rules explain how relative distributions can vary; by themselves, they do not calculate the effect of Sunderland joining.
What the published numbers do—and don’t—show
Deloitte’s 2026 review reports that Premier League clubs generated £6.8 billion in revenue in 2024/25, up £490 million, or 8%, from £6.3 billion in 2023/24. It attributed £95 million of that year-on-year increase to season-to-season club mix. That is an aggregate contribution to revenue growth, not a measured bill for incumbent clubs, a Sunderland-specific figure, or evidence that every incumbent lost money. The same review puts Premier League club broadcast revenue at £3.4 billion in 2024/25. Those club-wide figures describe the competition’s finances; they do not reveal how much a particular club’s distribution changed because of a promoted team.
Promotion’s prize belongs to the promoted club
Promotion can bring substantial additional income to the club that earns it, including broadcast, commercial and matchday revenue. To give a sense of scale—not a Sunderland forecast—Deloitte’s 2026 analysis of the 2026/27 Championship playoff winner projected at least £205 million in additional revenue across three seasons. It projected more than £365 million if the winner stayed in the Premier League after its first season. These are forward-looking estimates for a different promotion contest, not Sunderland’s realized or guaranteed receipts. Deloitte’s football finance analysis

The distinction is important: a promoted club’s potential new income does not automatically equal an equal-sized loss for each existing club. The published estimate combines projected matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue; it is not a calculation of the financial effect on Premier League rivals.
Why the financial debate extends beyond the Premier League
Promotion incentives are especially powerful in a financially difficult second tier. Deloitte’s 2026 Championship analysis reports aggregate losses of £4.5 billion over 20 seasons and aggregate net debt of £1.4 billion in its latest published 2025 snapshot. These figures describe Championship clubs, not costs to Premier League teams. Deloitte’s EFL financial review

There is also a broader distribution question: how much money flows from the Premier League to the rest of football. The League says it committed more than £550 million to the wider game in 2024/25. Separately, it says £1.6 billion was committed to the wider game and communities over the 2022–25 broadcast rights cycle, equal to 16% of League revenue. These are wider-game commitments, not costs caused by Sunderland’s promotion. Premier League 2024/25 payments announcement · Premier League wider-game funding announcement

As reported by Deloitte on 30 July 2026, the Premier League had announced a funded proposal for a new strategic partnership with the Football League for member clubs to consider. The proposals included merit-based Championship payments and a reduction in parachute payments as a share of equal distribution. The cited report describes proposals under consideration, not changes established as adopted and implemented. Deloitte’s EFL financial review
