The sale closed on May 4, 2020, and resolved litigation surrounding the Clippers’ proposed nearby arena. It cleared a major obstacle to the Inglewood project, but the available records do not show that the purchase legally or permanently ruled out a future move to Seattle.
What Ballmer bought and what it cost
On March 24, 2020, CAPSS LLC announced an agreement to acquire The Forum from Madison Square Garden. The NBA said the acquisition was driven by Clippers chairman Steve Ballmer and vice chairman Dennis Wong. The announced price was $400 million in cash, and the SEC-filed membership interest purchase agreement also states a $400 million purchase price, subject to the agreement’s terms and adjustments.
The NBA announcement describes the buyer and the cash price. The SEC-filed purchase agreement provides the contractual transaction details.
Why the Clippers’ organization pursued the purchase
The NBA said the deal “simultaneously resolv[ed] litigation surrounding plans for the new NBA arena.” The dispute involved plans for a privately financed Clippers arena in Inglewood, near The Forum. Buying the venue addressed that conflict and allowed the proposed arena plans to move forward; that is the documented connection between the purchase and the team’s local plans.

In the March 24, 2020 announcement, Ballmer said, “We are committed to our investment in the City of Inglewood, which will be good for the community, the Clippers, and our fans.” The statement records his position at the time; it is not, by itself, a guarantee of the team’s future location.
What happened after the agreement
The purchase closed on May 4, 2020. At closing, Madison Square Garden said Forum Entertainment LLC would continue operating The Forum as a live-event venue, while the Clippers’ nearby arena plans continued forward. The seller’s closing announcement describes those immediate plans.

Not in any formal or permanent way established by these records. The deal showed a substantial financial commitment to Inglewood and removed litigation tied to the proposed local arena. Those facts support saying Ballmer cleared a significant obstacle to the Clippers’ Inglewood plans. They do not establish that the purchase itself barred relocation to Seattle, or that Seattle was permanently ruled out.

The sources documenting the 2020 transaction do not provide a current official statement on Seattle relocation. The purchase should therefore be understood as a move that enabled the Inglewood arena plan to proceed, not as proof of a binding decision on every future relocation possibility.
