Re:

Why Starbucks Is Switching to Compostable Cups at About 580 U.S. Stores

A reported switch to compostable cups at about 580 Starbucks stores is a limited local response, separate from the company’s plastic-reducing cold cups and European hot-cup redesign.

Starbucks has not announced a chain-wide end to plastic cups. A 2025 report says about 580 U.S. stores are switching from plastic cold cups to paper-based cups with a thin bioplastic lining; Starbucks’ public guidance describes compostable cups and lids at a small number of stores because of local government requirements, but does not confirm the reported count. The limited change is one of several separate cup initiatives, not a single nationwide phaseout.

Why are some Starbucks stores changing cups?

The reported change reflects local requirements, not a stated company-wide decision to stop using plastic cups. Starbucks’ current A Better Cup for All guidance says a small number of stores provide compostable cups and lids due to local government requirements. It does not identify every affected location or spell out the individual rules.

Gizmodo reported in 2025 that about 580 stores were replacing plastic cold cups with paper-based alternatives lined with a thin bioplastic layer. The exact count comes from that report, rather than Starbucks’ public guidance. These cups should not be described as plastic-free: the report specifies a bioplastic lining. And “compostable” does not mean a cup will be accepted or properly composted in every local waste system; the cited sources do not establish local facility acceptance.

Are Starbucks plastic cups being discontinued everywhere?

No chain-wide discontinuation is established by the reported 580-store change. Starbucks describes compostable cups at a small number of stores, while separately promoting a redesign of its disposable cold cups. The scope and rationale differ by initiative and location.

What the 580-store report describes

The 2025 Gizmodo report concerns cold cups at a limited group of U.S. locations and describes paper-based cups with a thin bioplastic lining. Starbucks’ public guidance supports the local-government rationale but does not confirm that exact store count.

A separate cold-cup redesign in the U.S. and Canada

In April 2024, Starbucks announced redesigned tall, grande, venti, and trenta cold cups for its U.S. and Canada stores. The company says the cups use up to 20% less plastic than the previous design. It also estimated that the redesign would keep more than 13.5 million pounds of plastic from landfills annually. That figure is Starbucks’ projection, not a measured result.

The business context is clear: Starbucks figures reported by the Associated Press show that cold drinks accounted for 75% of U.S. beverage sales in 2024, up from 37% in 2013. The company’s redesign addresses the material used in a high-volume category; it is not the same as replacing plastic cups with compostable ones at certain locations.

A separate hot-cup project in Europe

In May 2025, Starbucks’ EMEA account described a redesigned European hot takeaway cup that removes the commonly used plastic lining. Developed with Transcend Packaging, it was introduced through a phased rollout in selected European markets. This regional hot-cup effort is distinct from both the reported U.S. compostable cold cups and the U.S.-and-Canada cold-cup redesign.

What Starbucks says about the limits of one cup solution

Different local rules, customer habits, drink formats, and disposal systems make a single packaging choice difficult to apply everywhere. As Starbucks vice president of product innovation Amelia Landers put it, “Every market has their own challenges, their own requirements and customer behavior. Some are more prime for reusables, some are less prime for reusables. There is no one silver bullet to a sustainable cup.” The Associated Press quoted Landers in April 2024.

The practical distinction is that Starbucks is pursuing multiple approaches: meeting local requirements with compostable cups and lids in some U.S. stores, reducing plastic in disposable cold cups in the U.S. and Canada, and changing the lining of hot takeaway cups in selected European markets. The sources do not establish that these approaches have identical environmental outcomes.

Can you bring your own cup to Starbucks?

Starbucks says customers may bring a clean personal cup, such as a reusable tumbler, thermos, or travel mug. Its January 2024 policy announcement covers company-operated and participating licensed stores in the U.S. and Canada, including café, drive-thru, and mobile orders. The company says the policy rollout built on a test at 200 Colorado drive-thru stores. Eligibility should not be assumed for every licensed store or for locations outside those countries.

For beverages consumed in company-owned stores with café seating, Starbucks’ current guidance says customers are served in ceramic mugs or glasses unless they request a to-go cup. A personal cup is therefore one option when it fits the order and the store’s policy; the available single-use cup can vary by location.

What the cup changes mean for customers

  • Check the local store: Compostable cups are reported at a limited set of U.S. stores, and the public guidance does not list all locations.
  • Bring a clean personal cup if eligible: Starbucks lists tumblers, thermoses, and travel mugs as examples, with the published U.S. and Canada policy covering company-operated and participating licensed stores.
  • Do not assume “compostable” means accepted everywhere: Disposal depends on local systems, and the cited sources do not detail which facilities accept these cups.
  • Keep the regional initiatives separate: The U.S. compostable-cup report, U.S.-and-Canada cold-cup redesign, and European hot-cup project have different materials, markets, and uses.

Starbucks presents cup changes as a collection of responses to different local and packaging conditions—not as a confirmed end to plastic cups throughout its store network. Its published claims specify material reductions and a projected landfill figure, but do not establish that every alternative cup is plastic-free or composted after use.
