Why Square Enix Is Expanding Beyond PlayStation Exclusives

Square Enix’s multiplatform shift is documented, but its reporting does not prove that PS5 exclusivity caused Final Fantasy XVI or Rebirth to disappoint.

Square Enix is pursuing broader platform support for its HD games, but its disclosures do not show that PS5 exclusivity alone caused Final Fantasy XVI or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to disappoint. The company’s stated reasons are to reach more customers and create more diverse earnings opportunities; its November 2025 report documents selected games expanding to PC, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch 2.

Why is Square Enix going multiplatform?

Square Enix announced in 2024 that it would “aggressively pursue” a multiplatform strategy for HD games spanning Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox and PC. In its May 14, 2025 results briefing, the company said the strategy was intended “to expand our customer contact points and to create more diverse earnings opportunities.” Square Enix’s 2025 results briefing describes the company’s rationale; it does not promise that every game will arrive on every system or launch everywhere at the same time.

For a game publisher, releasing a title on additional platforms can make it available to people outside the original console audience and create more ways to earn revenue from an existing game. That is the strategic logic Square Enix has stated, not proof that ports will generate a particular level of sales or resolve the company’s wider financial challenges.

Did Final Fantasy XVI and Rebirth underperform on PS5?

The available company reporting does not establish that either game underperformed because it was a PS5 exclusive. In its FY2024/3 stakeholder report, Square Enix said HD game sales increased year over year after major releases including Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It also reported that profit in the HD Games sub-segment declined, citing development-cost amortization and advertising expenses associated with new releases. The report does not provide title-level sales totals for either game or isolate exclusivity as the cause of the profit decline. The FY2024/3 stakeholder report gives the company’s segment-level account, not a verdict on either title’s individual performance.

FINAL FANTASY I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition - 2024 (NSW)
  • The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
  • These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
  • The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
  • Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
  • Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Square Enix Holdings reported ¥356.3 billion in sales and ¥32.5 billion in operating income for FY2024/3. Those are company-wide figures, not sales or profit attributable to either Final Fantasy game. The same report records a ¥22 billion loss on disposal of content as an extraordinary loss connected to terminating development efforts on certain content; it does not connect that charge specifically to PS5 exclusivity.

Another figure that needs careful context: the Digital Entertainment segment recorded ¥248.1 billion in net sales and ¥25.4 billion in operating income for FY2024/3. Digital Entertainment is broader than the HD Games sub-segment, so these totals should not be treated as a measure of Final Fantasy XVI or Rebirth’s results.

Which Square Enix games expanded to PC, Xbox or Nintendo?

Square Enix’s November 2025 progress report separates platforms available at initial launch from later support under its expansion strategy. Its examples show that release timing and status differ by game. The table reflects what the report said as of November 2025; later announcements or releases may have changed availability.

Game Initial platform and later releases listed November 2025 status for further expansion
Final Fantasy XVI Launched on PlayStation 5; released on PC in September 2024 and Xbox Series in June 2025. The report lists PC and Xbox Series as later support.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Launched on PlayStation 4; released on PC in December 2021. Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series support listed for 2026.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Launched on PlayStation 5; released on PC in January 2025. Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series support marked planned.

These are examples of catalog expansion, not evidence that the games had simultaneous launches across platforms. Square Enix said in the report that expansion projects for existing titles were “steadily advancing the expansion of the fan base for each IP.” That is the company’s description of its progress, not independent proof of the sales impact. The November 2025 progress report is a dated status snapshot, so check current platform-store listings for availability before buying.

What the financial figures do—and do not—show

Square Enix’s FY2024/3 reporting offers context for the strategy but does not settle whether a particular game succeeded commercially. The company reported higher HD game sales alongside lower HD Games sub-segment profit, and attributed the latter in part to costs associated with major new releases. It did not disclose title-level sales figures there, so readers cannot infer either game’s total sales or the financial effect of exclusivity from those segment results.

The company also reported ¥18.9 billion in merchandising net sales and ¥5.6 billion in merchandising operating income for FY2024/3, saying that merchandise connected with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy XVI partly supported sales. This is a separate business line from game sales and does not indicate how much either game earned.

Square Enix’s investor-relations site lists FY2027 Q1 results announced August 10, 2026. The listing confirms that a newer results announcement exists, but without the detailed materials it is not a basis for claiming that the multiplatform strategy has since proved financially successful. Square Enix’s investor-relations site is the place to consult for its published financial updates.

What players should expect from the strategy

  • More ports of selected games: The 2025 report documents expansion plans and releases for specific catalog titles, rather than a guarantee that all Square Enix games will come to all systems.
  • Different release schedules: A platform may receive a game years after its original launch, and a planned release is not the same as a confirmed, available one.
  • A business objective, not a proven outcome: Square Enix says broader access should expand its audience and diversify earnings. The cited disclosures do not establish that this approach will reverse profit declines or solve other financial pressures.
