The shift could pressure large agrichemical manufacturers, but it was not a measured national trend—and the cheapest product is not automatically the least costly choice once crop compatibility, label restrictions and potential respraying are considered.
Why farmers were looking for cheaper chemicals
Reuters reported on November 14, 2024, that growers preparing for the next spring planting season were cutting herbicide and pesticide budgets amid slumping farm incomes and depressed grain prices. Some were replacing branded pesticides and fungicides with less expensive generic alternatives.
The report described individual decisions and market context, not a national adoption rate. Illinois farmer Paul Butler said nearly one-third of the pesticides and fungicides used on his farm were generic. That figure describes his farm alone. Reuters also attributed an estimated 80% share of the agrichemical market for off-patent products to Rabobank agricultural analysts Owen Wagner and Sam Taylor in 2024; it is not a newly verified 2026 estimate. The analysts said more than two dozen active ingredient patents had expired in the preceding five years, and that glyphosate’s patent expired in 2000.
More generic options can give growers room to reduce input costs, but choosing a substitute is not simply a matter of matching a price or active ingredient. Product formulation, the crop and its seed traits, approved uses, and the support available if treatment falls short all matter.

What a generic switch can—and cannot—save
Compare the whole treatment decision
A lower purchase price can help a farm’s budget, but a product that does not fit the crop or weed-control plan may create additional costs. Reuters quoted Illinois grain grower Jeff O’Connor comparing the change to trading a familiar cereal for a cheaper store-brand version: “It’s like if you grew up eating Fruity Pebbles and now you go to Dollar General and get Fruity Bites.” The analogy captures a change in brand, not proof that products are interchangeable in performance or use.
The report also described a possible downside: a farmer raised the expense of respraying if a generic treatment did not work as expected. Matt Carstens, chief executive of farm cooperative Landus and agricultural financing company Conduit, framed the decision as a question of whether branded support is worth its cost: “It comes down to this: What does the farmer really need? Do they need a name brand, with protection insurance and complaint policies backing it? Do they need to pay for all of that?” Those protections and policies vary; the report does not establish that every branded product includes them or that generics lack comparable support.

Include the farm’s equipment strategy
Some farmers were also investing in equipment designed to target weeds and pests, with the aim of buying less chemical. Reuters did not identify particular equipment, prices or comparative performance, so the report supports this as a cost-management approach, not a specific purchasing recommendation.
Check crop compatibility and the exact label before substituting
Herbicide choice can be tied to seed selection. Some seed traits allow a crop to tolerate a particular herbicide, so a product that appears similar on price or active ingredient may not be appropriate for a given crop and trait combination. Mac Marshall, founder of agriculture advising firm Balcony View Consulting, said: “If there is a generic option to brand-name herbicides, and the seeds that a farmer purchases can tolerate it, then it can makes sense to go with a less expensive product.” The seed’s tolerance and the product’s authorized use both need to fit the intended application.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says pesticide labels specify approved uses, including the crop or site, amount, frequency and timing. EPA also says using a pesticide contrary to its label is a violation of federal law. Before choosing a generic, compare the exact registered product label—not just the brand or active ingredient—for the intended crop or site, application directions, restrictions and precautions. Glyphosate is one example of an off-patent active ingredient discussed in the Reuters report, which identifies it as the active ingredient in Roundup. That history does not make every glyphosate product suitable for every crop or use: the product’s own registered label governs. Reuters did not establish a particular formulation, price, seller or current availability.

What the 2024 shift means for manufacturers—and what it does not show
When growers buy lower-priced alternatives instead of branded products, manufacturers may face pressure to defend sales or explain the added value of brand support. But the report’s account of growers preparing for spring 2025 does not establish how common generic use is among U.S. farmers in 2026, how much revenue manufacturers have lost, or whether the shift continued at the same pace. Its market-share estimate and farmer examples are attributed to 2024 reporting and should be read in that period’s context.
