Michael Corleone Blanco, Griselda Blanco’s son, and his wife, Marie Ramírez, sued Netflix, Sofía Vergara and producers in Miami-Dade County in January 2024, before the six-episode series Griselda premiered. They alleged unauthorized use of identity and use of material they had shared during earlier development discussions. The plaintiffs sought to stop the release; later reporting said the case was resolved out of court and dismissed with prejudice. The settlement terms were not disclosed.

What did Griselda Blanco’s son allege?

The complaint, as summarized in contemporaneous reporting, raised two related but distinct claims. First, Blanco and Ramírez alleged that the series used family identity, image or likeness without authorization. Second, they alleged that Blanco had shared interview recordings and other materials in earlier discussions about a book and a program, and that the series drew on his narrative without credit or compensation. These were allegations by the plaintiffs, not findings by a court.

They asked the court to halt the planned release. Bloomberg Law reported on January 22, 2024, that Netflix sought to move the case to federal court; its account also described the requested relief, including damages and a halt to streaming. That procedural request was not a ruling on whether the allegations were true. Bloomberg Law’s report covers that early stage.

Why was Sofia Vergara named in the lawsuit?

Vergara starred as Griselda Blanco and was among the defendants named alongside Netflix and producers. The suit concerned the production and release of the series, rather than a separate dispute about Vergara’s personal finances. The available reporting does not establish that a court found Vergara or any other defendant liable.

How did Netflix describe the series?

Netflix’s initial position, as reported by El Universo, was that the project had been proposed as fiction rather than as a documentary, and that it was not intended to present events exactly as they happened. That account is a reported description of Netflix’s position, not a court finding or a resolution of the plaintiffs’ claims. El Universo’s report recounts the allegations and Netflix’s characterization.

Netflix describes Griselda as a six-episode fictional dramatization inspired by real events. The company says the creators condensed timelines and combined moments. Co-creator Doug Miro described the series’ portrayal of violence this way: “Griselda’s violence was a building of her hubris and her sense of power.” That is a creator’s characterization of the drama, not an independent historical conclusion. Netflix’s series overview provides its description and streaming information.

Did the lawsuit settle, and what were the terms?

Univision later reported that the dispute was resolved out of court and the complaint was dismissed with prejudice. A dismissal with prejudice generally means the claim cannot be brought again in the same form, but it does not by itself reveal what the parties agreed to or establish who would have prevailed at trial. The reports reviewed did not disclose the settlement terms, including any payment, credit, licensing arrangement or other concession. Univision’s coverage reports the agreement and dismissal.

Where to watch Griselda

Netflix lists the six-episode series on its service. Its fictionalized format and the existence of the lawsuit are separate matters: the lawsuit’s reported resolution does not establish the accuracy of the series, and the series’ description as fiction does not resolve the plaintiffs’ allegations.
