Six Flags reported a 2025 net loss of $1.599 billion, but that figure was dominated by a $1.52 billion impairment charge—not evidence that the company spent or lost that much cash in day-to-day operations. In response to weaker-than-expected results, management said it would direct capital more selectively toward parks it considers its highest-return properties. That is a change in investment priorities, not a stated plan to stop investing in parks.
Why did Six Flags lose $1.6 billion?
Six Flags Entertainment’s 2025 Form 10-K reports a net loss attributable to the company of $1.599 billion, or $15.89 per diluted share. The filing says the year-over-year decline in net income margin was primarily driven by a cumulative $1.52 billion impairment recorded in the third quarter of 2025. Six Flags’ 2025 Form 10-K
An impairment is an accounting charge that reduces the recorded value of assets when a company’s estimates indicate they may not be recoverable at their carrying value. Six Flags said it tested the Former Six Flags and Schlitterbahn reporting units and the Six Flags and Schlitterbahn trade names. Management cited lower estimates of future cash flows after revenue and earnings missed expectations through the seasonally important third quarter, alongside a share-price decline that was more significant and persistent than those of industry peers. The $1.599 billion figure is a GAAP net loss, not a measure of cash burned in operations. The impairment was the dominant accounting factor, and the sources cited here do not establish that the full net loss represented cash outflow. Adjusted EBITDA, discussed below, is a non-GAAP measure and should not be treated as interchangeable with net income.

What changed in Six Flags’ investment strategy?
In its November 7, 2025 third-quarter earnings release, CEO Richard Zimmerman said: “We are disciplined in our approach to capital allocation and prepared to prioritize investments in our highest return properties moving forward.” Six Flags’ third-quarter 2025 results release
The company’s 2025 strategy had included investing ahead of attendance growth to improve guest satisfaction. Management said demand-stimulation efforts did not deliver the returns it wanted and that earlier advertising spending affected third-quarter results. Its stated adjustment was to make capital allocation more selective; the release does not say Six Flags would end park investment or withdraw all investment from lower-performing properties.

At its May 2025 Investor Day, Six Flags outlined a broader framework that included recovering attendance, increasing admissions pricing, growing in-park guest spending, targeting $180 million in cost savings by the end of 2026, and optimizing free-cash-flow allocation to reduce net leverage. For the quarter ended June 28, 2026, Six Flags reported net revenue of $865 million, a net loss of $203 million, and Adjusted EBITDA of $243 million, approximately unchanged from the prior-year quarter. These reported comparisons reflect a smaller portfolio: the prior-year results included seven parks later sold to EPR Properties and one combined amusement and water park in Bowie, Maryland, that ceased operations after the 2025 season. To show performance on a more comparable footprint, the company also reported same-park results that exclude those seven sold parks and the closed Bowie park:

Six Flags said season-pass visitation primarily supported same-park attendance growth. The results therefore show improvement in several same-park measures alongside weaker per-capita spending; they do not establish that the investment shift has succeeded. A single quarter also cannot resolve the effects of seasonality, portfolio changes, or continued execution risks.

How to read the loss and the newer results
- Separate net loss from operating measures. The 2025 net loss includes the large impairment; Adjusted EBITDA is a non-GAAP measure, not net income.
- Separate reported from same-park results. The second-quarter 2026 reported comparison includes the effects of parks that were later sold or closed, while same-park figures exclude them.
- Separate attendance from spending. Same-park attendance rose in Q2 2026, while per-capita spending fell 1%.
- Separate targets from results. The $180 million cost-savings figure was a management target for the end of 2026, not an announced realized saving.
