Why Silver Fell More Than 6% After Its December 2025 Rally

Forbes reported a sharp silver decline on December 29, 2025, after an early-session high. The move coincided with higher CME performance-bond requirements, but the evidence does not prove they caused the selloff.

Silver fell more than 6% intraday on December 29, 2025, after reaching an early-session high of $82.67, according to Forbes. Forbes reported silver at about $71.23 at 10:30 a.m. EST; its headline described the drop as more than 7%. The selloff followed a sharp rally and coincided with a CME Group increase in silver performance-bond requirements, but the available reporting does not prove that the margin change caused the decline.

What happened to silver on December 29, 2025?

Forbes reported that silver reached $82.67 in early trading before falling more than 6% intraday. At 10:30 a.m. EST, Forbes quoted the price at about $71.23. Its headline characterized the decline as more than 7%, so the headline figure and the body’s reported intraday figure should not be treated as identical measurements. These are Forbes-reported intraday prices, not an official exchange settlement price or a live quote.

The decline came after a rapid rally. Forbes described that rally as supported by interest-rate cuts, demand tied to AI data centers, constrained supply, tariff uncertainty and speculative retail buying, but did not quantify how much each factor contributed to the rally or the subsequent reversal.

Did CME raise silver margins, and did that cause the drop?

CME Group’s clearing notice says performance-bond requirements were revised after its normal review of market volatility, with the changes taking effect after the close of business on December 29, 2025. The notice says the review was intended “to ensure adequate collateral coverage.” See CME Group’s clearing advisory.

Forbes linked the timing of the higher requirements to the selloff and cited the possibility that increased collateral requirements could curb speculative buying. That makes the margin change relevant context, not proof of a single cause: the notice confirms the action and timing, but does not establish that it triggered all or most of the price decline.

Why can silver move more sharply than gold?

Silver has both investment and industrial uses. Reuters’ June 2026 analysis says that industrial exposure can make silver more sensitive than gold to changes in risk appetite. It also notes that silver had risen more before its later correction, leaving more ground to give back. Those are broader observations about silver’s volatility, not direct evidence of what caused the December 29, 2025 move. Read Reuters’ June 2026 analysis.

That combination can produce sharp swings: investment demand can support a rally, while concerns about economic activity can weigh on expectations for industrial use. Positioning and changing expectations for interest rates can also affect precious metals. Forbes quoted market participant Brent Donnelly describing silver as a product that “goes parabolic, then collapses”; that is his characterization, not a rule that predicts future prices.

How does the December 2025 episode compare with later 2026 moves?

Silver continued to fluctuate in 2026, but later price moves are separate episodes and should not be used to revise the December 2025 intraday figures.

LBMA also records a January 29, 2026 all-time high of $118.450. It is a later milestone, not the high reported in the December 2025 episode.

What did analysts expect for silver supply and demand in 2026?

In April 2026, Reuters reported a Silver Institute and Metals Focus forecast that the silver-market deficit would reach 46.3 million ounces in 2026, compared with 40.3 million ounces in 2025. The same forecast anticipated an 18% rise in coin and bar demand in 2026. These are forecast estimates, not final audited outcomes. See Reuters’ report on the outlook.

A projected deficit or higher forecast demand does not establish that silver prices must rise: prices also reflect investment flows, economic expectations, currency and interest-rate moves, and market positioning. The forecast is not evidence that the December 2025 decline was a buying opportunity.

What should a personal-finance reader take from the selloff?

The December 29 episode illustrates why a sharp rally is not a dependable guide to the next move. If you are considering silver as an investment, distinguish among the metal’s spot price, a financial product linked to silver, and physical bullion; they can have different costs and risks. For physical coins or bars, check authenticity, the premium over spot, and resale terms rather than treating a headline price move as a buy signal.
