Salesforce’s plan to hire about 3,300 people in September 2023 was a targeted bet on growth areas—not a reversal of its earlier workforce cuts. The company had eliminated roughly 8,000 roles, or about 10% of its workforce, earlier that year. Executives said the planned hiring would focus roughly equally on sales, engineering, and Data Cloud as enterprise interest in generative AI picked up.
Why was Salesforce hiring after laying off thousands?
The two moves reflected a change in where Salesforce wanted to spend, rather than a promise to restore every job it had cut. In January 2023, the company announced a restructuring that eliminated about 8,000 roles. In September, CEO Marc Benioff described a new hiring plan as necessary to grow the business while maintaining strong margins. “Our job is to grow the company and to continue to achieve great margins,” he said in a Bloomberg interview reported in September 2023.
The planned 3,300 hires amounted to about 40% of the 8,000 roles eliminated, based on those reported figures. That comparison is arithmetic, not a Salesforce-published staffing metric. Nor does the plan establish that all 3,300 jobs were ultimately filled: the figure was reported from the interview, rather than confirmed in a separate Salesforce hiring release in the coverage available.
Which areas were expected to get the new jobs?
Salesforce COO Brian Millham identified three areas for the hiring surge. The reported plan divided the roles roughly equally among them; the company did not publish exact headcounts for each category.

That mix matters: Salesforce did not describe the 3,300 positions as exclusively AI research or engineering jobs. Sales roles were part of the plan, alongside engineering and the Data Cloud business. The announcement did not identify how many positions would work directly on generative AI, or list specific job titles.
How did generative AI fit into the hiring plan?
Salesforce was positioning generative AI as a fresh enterprise spending opportunity. Its products included Einstein Copilot and Data Cloud; the company later expanded its AI strategy around Agentforce. The hiring plan aligned staffing with that growth thesis, but the announcement did not say that every role would build AI products or that AI alone caused the hiring decision.

Salesforce’s later strategy emphasized agents as well as generative AI. In 2024, the company set a target of one billion agents by the end of 2025. That was a forward-looking target announced by Salesforce Investor Relations, not evidence by itself that the target was achieved. Salesforce also described internal AI-skills efforts: in October 2024, EVP of Talent Growth & Development Lori Castillo Martinez said employees were being given time to engage responsibly with AI tools as part of the company’s “agentic AI journey.”
Could former Salesforce employees apply again?
Yes. Benioff encouraged former employees to apply to return, describing the possibility as “boomerang” hiring. Bringing back experienced workers could help the company fill roles more quickly than recruiting and onboarding entirely new employees, while the focus on selected business areas fit its stated emphasis on growth and margins. The invitation was not a guarantee of rehiring; former employees would still need to apply for available roles.
What did the announcement mean for Salesforce jobs later?
The 2023 announcement is best read as a planned, focused hiring rebound, not a current count of Salesforce employees or a promise of ongoing recruitment at the same pace. Salesforce Careers reported more than 72,000 employees in 2024, but that figure alone does not show how many of the planned 3,300 hires were completed or how staffing changed after the cuts.
Salesforce Careers displayed 1,480 open job results when accessed on September 28, 2026. That is a dated snapshot of search results, not a confirmed count of distinct vacancies, and listings can change. It does not establish how many openings are AI-related or whether Salesforce is still pursuing the 2023 hiring plan.
For job seekers, the practical takeaway is to evaluate actual postings rather than infer available roles from the headline figure. Check the job title, team, location, qualifications, and posting status on Salesforce Careers; the 2023 announcement did not provide a detailed list of positions or hiring locations.
