Salesforce and Workday are building an AI employee service agent together because each holds different business information: Salesforce brings customer and workflow data, while Workday brings employee and financial data. Their announced goal is an assistant that can use authorized context from both platforms to answer employees, handle some tasks, and pass harder cases to a person with the conversation history intact.
Why the partnership makes sense to the companies
Salesforce is a major customer relationship management and workflow platform; Workday is a system of record for people and money. An employee question can cross that boundary. For example, an onboarding process may involve employee records in Workday and access to tools or workflows managed through Salesforce or Slack.
The companies’ July 24, 2024 announcement described combining Salesforce Agentforce and Einstein with Workday AI, alongside Salesforce CRM data and Workday HR and financial data. The intended advantage is that an employee can ask once and receive an answer informed by relevant systems instead of navigating separate interfaces or relying on disconnected integrations.
| Part of the proposed service | Role described in the announcement |
|---|---|
| Salesforce | CRM data, Agentforce and Einstein, Data Cloud, and Slack workflows |
| Workday | HR and financial data, Workday AI, and employee and finance workflows |
| Joint agent | Natural-language interaction intended to retrieve authorized context, take actions across platforms, and route complex cases to people with context preserved |
Why not build it inside just one platform?
A single-platform assistant may be useful for questions confined to that platform. The partnership is aimed at requests that need context or action across both companies’ products. Each vendor also has an ecosystem through which it can distribute capabilities: Salesforce’s Agentforce Partner Network includes Workday as a launch partner and describes partner actions, templates, and AppExchange distribution.

What the employee agent is meant to do
The announced use cases span common employee-service requests and development tasks. They are proposed capabilities, not proof that every customer has them enabled or that every request can be completed automatically.
- Onboarding: coordinate paperwork, resource provisioning, and training.
- HR self-service: answer questions about paid time off, benefits, and policies, and support transactions such as healthcare-plan updates.
- Career development: recommend learning paths based on a person’s role, skills, and career interests tracked in Workday.
The intended interface includes Salesforce, Slack, or Workday. The agent is described as able to retrieve context, automate resolution where appropriate, and escalate complex cases to the relevant person while retaining the conversation history. The announcements do not specify a universal set of supported transactions, required customer configuration, or response-time guarantees.

How Salesforce and Workday describe sharing data
The companies positioned Salesforce Data Cloud and the Zero Copy Partner Network as part of a shared data foundation. They said the approach is intended to reduce duplicated data and custom integrations, with authorization controls so people see only information they are permitted to access.
That is a design goal, not a claim that all Workday HR or finance records become visible to Salesforce, Slack, or every employee. What a user or agent can retrieve depends on permissions and customer configuration. The announcements do not establish that the approach eliminates integration work or guarantees that every source record will be current in every workflow.

Why the pitch goes beyond an HR help desk
Salesforce and Workday also described employer-facing possibilities that connect workforce, customer, and financial planning:
- Combine Workday skills-supply forecasts with Salesforce demand signals for workforce planning.
- Use unified employee and customer data in rolling financial forecasts and scenario analysis.
- Guide sellers using historical activity and targeted coaching.
These are vendor-stated use cases. The announcements provide no independent measurement showing that this specific joint agent improves productivity, reduces costs, or produces better forecasts.

What changed after the 2024 announcement
The 2024 announcement described plans for the employee service agent. In February 2025, Workday said the companies had partnered on employee-service agents and that Agentforce agents would soon be available on Workday Marketplace for HR and finance professionals. “Soon” in that announcement is not, by itself, confirmation of current listing, availability, price, or eligibility.
In June 2025, Workday announced its Agent Partner Network and Agent Gateway. Workday said partners could connect agents to its Agent System of Record and customers could discover and deploy partner agents through Workday Marketplace. Workday described the Agent System of Record as a control plane for agent roles, data access, actions, accountability, and performance.

Is Workday’s Agent System of Record the same as the Salesforce employee agent?
No. They are different parts of the story. The joint employee-service agent is the proposed employee-facing service capability. Workday’s Agent System of Record is described as a governance and control layer for managing agents, including partner agents. Workday’s June 2025 announcement says partner agents can connect through the Agent Gateway; it does not make the Agent System of Record itself the employee-service agent.

The announcements explain the intended design, but do not settle practical deployment questions for every organization. Before treating the agent as a live HR or finance channel, an employer would need to establish:
- Whether the relevant agent is currently listed and available in its region and product edition.
- Which Workday and Salesforce records and actions are supported, and how access permissions are enforced.
- How employee identity, approvals, audit history, and handoff to a human caseworker work in its configuration.
- What integrations, implementation work, and commercial terms are required.
- How it will measure resolution quality, time saved, escalation rates, and errors against its existing service process.
For employees, the key practical distinction is that an AI answer about a benefit or policy is not the same thing as an approved transaction. For consequential changes, follow the employer’s normal confirmation and escalation process unless the organization clearly identifies the agent’s completed action and its record.
