Did Alibaba Accept PayPal? What the 2010 AliExpress Report Actually Said

Network World reported in 2010 that AliExpress accepted PayPal—not that PayPal was available across Alibaba’s services. The report does not confirm current payment options.

Yes—but the 2010 report was specifically about AliExpress, not every Alibaba service. Network World reported on April 27, 2010, that AliExpress accepted PayPal as one of several payment options. That historical report does not establish whether PayPal is accepted there today.

What did the 2010 PayPal announcement cover?

Network World’s April 27, 2010 report described PayPal as a checkout option on AliExpress, a marketplace aimed at small and medium-sized retailers and wholesalers outside China sourcing from Chinese companies. Alibaba spokesperson Linda Kozlowski characterized PayPal as “simply another option for payment.” Network World’s report

The wording matters: this was a report about AliExpress, not a blanket announcement that PayPal worked across Alibaba’s services. It does not establish that Taobao accepted PayPal.

How did AliExpress differ from Alibaba.com in the report?

Network World contrasted the marketplaces by their typical buyers and orders:

Marketplace, as described in 2010 Audience and typical order Payment arrangement in the report
AliExpress International small and medium-sized retailers and wholesalers sourcing from Chinese companies; smaller orders of goods already in stock. PayPal, Visa, MasterCard and bank transfer were listed as payment options. Alipay was not listed as a checkout option, though the report said it provided escrow service.
Alibaba.com Buyers typically placed larger orders for customized goods. The report said buyers often paid offline.

This is a comparison of the services as the 2010 article described them, not a guide to their current checkout methods, fees, protections or availability.

Was Alipay the same as paying by PayPal?

No. The report distinguished the payment options from escrow: PayPal, cards and bank transfer were described as ways to pay on AliExpress, while Alipay was said to provide escrow service there. It did not list Alipay as an AliExpress checkout option. These roles should not be conflated.

Why did Alibaba add PayPal, and what was the Alipay investment?

The report said Alibaba viewed a choice of payment methods as useful to users. It also placed the move in the context of competition involving Alibaba, PayPal and eBay. As historical context, Network World reported that Alibaba had announced earlier in April 2010 a plan to invest 5 billion yuan (US$702 million) in Alipay over five years for international expansion. That was a reported plan at the time, not a current investment commitment.

Does AliExpress, Alibaba.com or Taobao accept PayPal now?

The April 2010 article cannot answer that current question. It confirms the historical AliExpress report only; it does not verify today’s payment methods on AliExpress, Alibaba.com or Taobao, or whether availability varies by market. Check the payment methods displayed for your own account and order at checkout before relying on PayPal being available.
