Ryan Petersen announced on July 10, 2023, that he was joining Founders Fund as a partner while continuing as Flexport’s executive chairman. The roles later shifted: he returned as Flexport CEO in September 2023, and The Information subsequently reported that Founders Fund retained him as a venture partner. Founders Fund’s team page, accessed October 8, 2026, does not list him, so his current title at the firm is unclear.

What Petersen announced in July 2023

Flexport published Petersen’s announcement on July 10, 2023. He wrote, “Today we are announcing that I am joining Founders Fund as a partner.” At the time, he said he would remain active as Flexport’s executive chairman, supporting the company’s growth initiatives, meeting customers, building its brand, and supporting Flexport.org. Flexport’s announcement is the primary account of his plans and reasoning.

Petersen said Founders Fund was the only venture firm he considered. He cited its previous investment in Flexport and its willingness to support his continued involvement with the company. Those are Petersen’s stated reasons, not an independent account of the firm’s decision-making.

What the Founders Fund role involved

TechCrunch reported on July 10, 2023, that Founders Fund had confirmed Petersen’s appointment. General Partner Trae Stephens welcomed him, saying, “We’ve always struggled to define the quintessential Founders Fund founder. Clearly, it’s Ryan. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the team.”

The report described Petersen’s investment remit as generalist. Petersen said, “I’m interested in innovative companies regardless of their stage or industry.” He also wrote that he had made more than 100 angel investments over the preceding decade. That figure is his own description in the July 10 announcement, not a market-wide statistic.

In that same announcement, Petersen said Founders Fund had participated in every Flexport funding round and led two. TechCrunch’s July 10, 2023 report noted Flexport’s $935 million Series E in February 2022 at an $8 billion valuation. Those are historical financing details, not a statement of Flexport’s current valuation.

How his roles changed after the announcement

The July announcement paired a Founders Fund partner role with Petersen’s Flexport executive-chairman role. The subsequent chronology is important because neither title should be treated as a permanent description of his roles.

Is Ryan Petersen still a Founders Fund partner?

The available sources do not confirm his current Founders Fund title. The firm’s July 2023 appointment was described as a partner role; The Information later reported that he remained on its team as a venture partner after returning to Flexport. But the current published team roster, accessed October 8, 2026, does not list him. That roster omission is not enough to conclude that his relationship with the firm ended, or to establish a different title.

Accordingly, “partner” accurately describes the July 2023 announcement, while “venture partner” describes a later status reported in 2023. Neither should be presented as a confirmed current title based on these sources.
